I'm thinking tuning the resonating guitar for the notes of the scale a song is in rather than notes that might not even appear...although you might some harmonics. Maybe just get a harp (or autoharp for the micro version) and mic that up. I wonder what else could be used like that...xylophone? tuned to pitch drums?

Yeah thats totally what I am thinking. tuned standard it was " what is that weird noise? Tuned open to work with the key a piece is in, might be really great. Definitely going to experiment.

Wow guys, what a great idea! I should have read this when I was still in the recording studio.

That damn thing was resonating loud enough to be audible above 3 100 watt guitar amps and a peavey cl400/sunn concert bass rig. tuning that to be something that would add to a drone sound would be amazing. You guys have me thinking crazy thoughts now ;) Might have to figure out an open tuning that works for it and set up a mic on it.

I think what got me started on drone was having a bass leaning against a cab in a tuning and just sitting there listening to the thing, I thought it was cool, it was years before I found out that it was a thing

Really though, run them direct to your recording setup vs micing it's easier to control and mix later :thumb:

a hurdy gurdy can give some intense droneage. add some effects/fuzz too, but getting the harmonics into action is awesome.

I've come close to getting a hurdy gurdy. I've heard they're hard to tune to other instruments and even themselves.

Anyone spent much time with any of the Z Vex Probe pedals? This fuzz demo seems pretty cool and translatable to a drone context. I always found the Fuzz Factory a pain to dial in non-crazy noises and I guess the have a Fat Fuzz Factory probe coming out.

hurdy gurdies are $$$$ too. i borrowed a friends, now its stuck in the back of my head that I need one. even the diy kits are pricey.

I've got the wah probe, and the fuzz factory probe. they are both quite inspiring, and i can't think of any negatives. the fuzz factory probe actually has more usable fuzz tones than the fuzz factory for some reason :idk: you could get some serious drone action with the fuzz probe, the fat fuzz would probably be an even richer drone-tone. if i were doing this live, it would be the set up where I use a table with all of my effects on it and I'm sitting in a chair with my guitar in my lap. this way I can use a hand to manipulate the drone for however long. otherwise standing up could be too much on the foot/ankle for an extended time, in my experience anyways.

dig this hurdy gurdy

I just wanted to say that the "barking string" of the hurdy gurdy is pretty much the worst thing in the world. PLEASE NEVER ENGAGE THAT STRING FOR THE LOVE OF GOD
Other than that, they kick ass.

I believe on the DVD that came with earth's bees made honey, Dylan talks about how when he first started he would find the resonant spot on a stage and shove an open tuned guitar plugged into an amp and then he'd play against it.

I've also been trying to think of less typical ways to do drone. I was thinking it would be cool if there was a looper that could randize playback or be sequenced...does this exist outside of connecting a laptop?

Eventide TimeFactor + EHX 8-Step Program. The TimeFactor looping algorithm allows you to non-destructively edit the start and stop points of the loop. Set those two controls to have different values at either end of the expression pedal sweep. Use the 8-Step to generate relatively-randomized (or non-randomized, if that's your thing) expression pedal values. Adjust to taste. Remember to sleep occasionally.

But that recentish interview he did with the kid that was interviewing him in the boat was really interesting, and the little set he did on the paddle boat was awesome too. Was using some weird parts guitar with super thick strings that I'd never seen before.

Oh, yeah, I dig Earth 2.0 a whole lot. Earth Mark 1 is one of those "in theory I should love it but it does absolutely nothing for me." bands.

Likewise. I'm all over *Hex* and anything later, but the older fuzzy drone stuff just loses me.
