new cab day ampeg v2

Post by vegedge »

so i went to go buy a v4 cab off a guy on craigslist. turned out to be a v2 cab. which is way bigger, and is really 2 sealed chambers 2x12.
has the original speakers. four cts from 1969. . it is big and made of some nice solid wood.
my only issue is that it is not wired. sooo..
the speakers are each 8 ohms. i need to wire it to 8 ohms(or 4. but i dont think this is possible?)

anyone play through on of these rare monsters? i am looking to use it for bass and guitar though my sunn 200s(hope to trade it soon for a v4/yba3 or musicman) i have herd mixed things about these speakers use for bass.

sorry for blurrrry pictures.

Original speakers are whack but great cab. The two chambers are not sealed. There are two small ports in each 2x12 chamber. Still a great cab. You can wire it to 8 ohms or 2 ohms only. I'd recommend swapping speakers but I just don't care for those speakers much. Still a good find if you got it for a good deal. They made two versions, an early flatback and a later tilt back with towel rack. Pics?

Also, I've heard great results if you block the ports and insulate the cab if you want to keep it as a bass cab. Just throw in some nicer, bass friendly speakers. And, I know I've already told you this before but, I still say you should keep your 200s over a V4. I have a YBA-3 also though and that's a beast on its own, so that might be a worthy amp to swap for. But I've also stated several times I'm not a huge V4 fan. I mean, if you're not happy with your 200s, by all means, do what makes you happy. I know I've let go of plenty amps that people told me not to, haha :thumb:

Yeah, I recently swapped mine out of my bass rig and now run it strictly as part of my guitar rig. I just add a SS/BS sparkle motion and BAM! It smokes through some EVM-12L's.

But yeah, if you wanna use the v2 as a bass cab, block the ports and add some lining on the sides and rear baffle. That with some Emi bass drivers and it'll be wicked good sounding.

plywood slat across the rear of the port, screwed onto the baffle. Just make it well secured.

hooked up the original cts speakers and this thing sounds huge with my sunn. even on bass i can get way louder than i ever could on my ampeg 410 and no more farting out and buzzing.

I had one for a while,
for such a BIG cab it didn't sound that big. I've got an Ampeg 412HE now that I think sounds much better - and bigger!.

What speakers did you put in there and did you play guitar or bass?

quad of 200watt HH ACOUSTICS 1200E http://i.imgur.com/JSaWDqV.jpg
for baritone (tuned drop A) and Fender VI
They were beefy speakers, and I tried pushing them with and Orange OTR120, Hiwatt DR201 and Ampeg SVT
I guess they don't have the high SPL ratings I'm used to from other speakers :idk:

I don't know if I regret selling that cab. I was attracted to it because of it's size and I wanted a beater cab to take out instead of my Orange PPC412 cabs (that live in road cases and my bandmates moan at helping me with em, yet i've swore to never let those cabs leave those cases...). But the V2 was just as big and heavy as the roadcased orange 412, so that was a stupid useless plan - I much prefer how my orange or Berg412 cabs sounded, and really didn't want to sacrifice my tone - so the V2 was gone as quickly as it arrived.
