Love leslie and leslie-ish sounds :)

i'm finding more and more that i'm into fast modulation a lot... rotary pedals are too expensive for me though... so I always make these sounds using different stuff. Mostly the flanger on my Digitech PDS 20/20 (which does this great oldschool electric organ thing) or a phaser

i accept these are different sounds, but i just like the whole colour aesthetic i guess :idk:

Not all phasers work, mind you... Small Stones don't work at all for me for this, i prefer more Mu-tron phaser-ish sounds... think the clean break in Dopesmoker

circa 41:20 mark

Faye sing, surprisingly didn't work either, but that's only because the maximum rate is too slow... So right now, i'm using the cheap Ibanez PM-7, which for 30 dollars i got it for makes amazing sounds! It's very tweakable and after some tweaking i found a "rotary" setting i like very much and with a simple flick of a switch i get a nice ring mod on the same settings :)

another favourite has been Boss PH-2... and if i wanted to go proper leslie, i'd buy a Boss RT-20, that one is REALLY good :)

i still like the phasers and flangers on fast settings for a similar purpose... different, but definitely interesting

Dude, that part of dopesmoker is basically my whole life right now. So, YEAH THAT!
Actually, John mentioned an old peavey pedal in the doom room the other day that was renowned for its Leslie emulation. Apparently it was good enough for pike as well. But I couldn't find a demo of it though.
Yeah I've thought about getting a bf2 or electric mistress on the cheap to do it....but that grind...plus I like slower Leslie sounds as well.
I might have to look into an el cheapo solution like a bf2 for now until I get a job that pays real dollars. The lex is still out front. Foot controller.
Shit yeah.

Yeah, chrous pedals too. I have an MXR Micro Chorus, and it sounds a lot like the Leslie guitar on the Stones' "Let It Loose" with the rate knob on full.

I've never been able to do it with a chorus. They always just sound like a fast chorus to me. Which is kinda gross to my ear.
Kim Thayill chorus good. Cheesy 80s chorus bad. But again that's all just personal preference.

Ya das Boss, never played one myself but they're fairly cheap used compared to a lot of other Leslie simulators and have a ton of controls.

I completely forgot to mention this, but I used to have a Boss RT-20, and it's actually a really good pedal. I would go so far as to say that it is severely underrated. It has 3 different rotary models, and a univibe mode as well. It has a shitload of controls, including expression. I dug it. I just had no particular use for it at the time. Now that I have a need for a leslie sim, I just use the Mobius.

Shit yeah.

Tangentially related, but on the phaser front those crazy "world is ending" phaser sounds on Dopethrone are from a Phase 90 in a wah housing.
good deals are here.

Yeah, that would work well for Leslie sounds. As would likewise a flanger in a wah housing.

absolutely underrated, i was always wondering about it and then i tried one and now i KNOW :) awesome!

but it's kind of rare used :( which makes it a bit sour for me (don''t really buy new pedals)

Dont forget the mxr flanger! Less metallic than one and less chorusey than the other. A nice middle ground. Just as cheap if not cheaper on da bay. I've been through two and got them both sub $100.

IIRC, phasers were introduced as a leslie alternative/substitute.

I have an Effectrode phase-O-matic deluxe; a photo-optical vacuum tube phaser that can do the most convincing Leslie sims I've heard...in terms of pure sound of the effect.
Part of it is the rolloff from the tubes, in my estimation...but also the fact that you can adjust the range of the sweep, the waveshape and resonance in addition to the lfo speed.

The only characteristics it lacks are the ramp up/down from toggling between fixed rate slow/fast speeds...and the overdrive.
The Destination Rotation has both of those things...and while it lacks the features of the p-O-m, it has another very cool knob labled "mic placement".

If only someone were to combine the 2...

That Option 5 is rather nice.

I love my Phase 90...pretty much anything in a wah enclosure for modulation is winning. Really wanna jump that Wilson Vibe monkmiles has in BST...no cash.

I have heard some good things about that one. I guess any of those sub $100 options are worth checking at this point.

What I might do long term those is work towards a mobius. I'm always a bigger fan of analog over digital (as far as other modulation effects are concerned), but if its got the lex on it anyhow as well as some other tasty bits, I think that's the flavour country I need to pilgrimage towards.

I think the BF2 is tits when it comes to that sound, and it sounds good with dirt. Otherwise, pick up a Dr Sci RRR in the BST. The last mode is a Leslie sim and it rules hard. And you get sick, dirt guzzling reverbs as well. The Leslie sim is limited in what you can control but it doesn't matter cos it's good.
