Re: ordering a matamp
I just checked out the dealer for Canada and the US, apparently Matamp has moved to direct orders only. http://g-spot-music.com/site/matamp-usa-canada/

Yeah, I thought going directly through Matamp UK was the only way.

Yeah, I'm not sure where the truth lies in that whole horror story.
I know that if I was gonna have a US builder make me a "Matamp" style head, I'd talk to Dunwich Nick long before I talked to EA.

I'm sure we've all read stuff around the traps about the dude at Electric Amps being more than his fair share of eccentric.
I've been in contact with Nick a bit about my build so far (still spitballing on the waitlist). He is particular, but it ain't a bad thing. He gives a shit about what he's doing and he's pretty cool to deal with.
Especially considering he will email you back about every little thing you hassle him about when he has SO much other shit on his plate.
If I was closer to the UK/shipping wasn't as brutal, I'd have considered Matamp. But shipping to here from the US works out cheaper than from the UK, plus Nick's rates aren't as brutal. Although I don't want to comment on his pricing schema as you are best off talking to him about that. Keep in mind that you will be getting the amp that YOU want as well.
That's my spare change there.

Re: ordering a matamp
I think with boutique amps you should get something from a close supplier in case any issues arise. Matamp suppliers pop up every so often, then dissappear... because there's hardly a large market for the things, or big bucks in importing them. Going direct is really the only way.
If you're in the USA, I'd get a Dunwich/Hovercraft in the style of an ormat.
Get an Electric if that's definitely what you want, its in a similar vein, but has its own vicious sound. I love that sound for sure, and wouldn't have reservations about ordering one (although I think its bullshit Joel is sitting on the Matamp trademark in the US), I think their wait list is much more reasonable these days...
In aus, Tym Guitars used to be the official importer of Matamp. They still have a few models in the store, I'm not sure if all of them are for sale. They do hire them. Although Matamp (soured no doubt from the Electric saga, and always wary of cloners to the point that getting straight forward technical answers from them is sometimes difficult) cut ties with Tym after they made "the Lemon" OR style amp.
I got my GT1 through a NZ boutique amp shop, who imported a bunch of stuff ten years ago, but hadn't restocked since then (tiny market down here). I'm not certain but I think my amp was the first he'd ordered from them in a while. I could have gone direct, and saved a few hundred I'm sure, but I was very clear about my customisations and didn't mind supporting a local venture. The wait time was 50% over what I was quoted. But that's par for the course with any custom work really.

Re: ordering a matamp
Currently no. EA (Electrical Audio or "Joel") currently makes all the Green / Black / Purple / White labeled Matamps and I'm not positive but he may make some Matamp labeled amps as well, while over in the UK there's MATAMP who pretty much strictly makes Matamp labeled amps unless you order a custom face plate. The past with the Matamp name is a different story though, of which I'm not sure exactly how it goes.Greenfuz wrote:wait matamp and those green and whatever amps aren't the same thing
Matamp UK turn around time is around 2-3 months last i heard but they need some help with international shipping practices.
EA lead time is around 2 years from what I'm hearing (something about his plate engraver passing away and having difficulty finding someone else who will do it EXACTLY like the last guy has put the last batch on hold for over 6 months) but his cabs have around a 6 month lead time.

Re: ordering a matamp
I may be way off here, but history wise, I'm pretty sure matamp were making all sorts of studio gear, including amps and then made the Orange amps for a particular studio, whom I think had some kind of connection to the color with their name (i just woke up, so I'm a bit fuzzy), then at some point someone bought the Orange name/split the company. Matamp made some different coloured jobs, green being the most recognisable, then, many moons layer in the 90s came the divide between matamp UK and elected in the US.
In a nutshell.
