Help me pick new speakers for my Ampeg VT-22!
So I'm overhauling my ampeg after I had a major meltdown, and the speakers are on their last legs. What should I throw in there?
I need 2, they have to be, 16 ohms, probably about 75 watts each preferably (tech said the "100 watt" amp is actually spitting out closer to 130), and hopefully cheap! I don't mind spending a bit of money, but you know how it is.
What sounds good paired with your V4/VT-22?
GO!
p.s. No vintage 30s. I already have a cab with those.

Re: Help me pick new speakers for my Ampeg VT-22!
The best I ever heard my V4 was with four 50w greenback clones from eminence (Legend GB's). I don't know of many 75-80w clones though, but I would suggest looking into something greenback related if you want some flavor. You can also look through the eminence line for that power rating. Maybe something on the vein of old EVM-12L's? Or you can find a used pair of original ones. I got mine long after I sold my V4's, but they've sounded great with every amp going through them.

Have you considered having the amp turned into a head instead of a combo and getting a 412?
If you're set on keeping it a combo, I'd look at the Eminence Texas Heat, Swamp Thing or The Wizard in that order.

I have considered it, but for now I'll just keep it a combo. I don't want to lower the resale and lower than I already have haha.MEC wrote:^This is the fuckin' truth.chillerthanmost wrote:The best I ever heard my V4 was with four 50w greenback clones from eminence (Legend GB's).

Would it be silly to put different speakers in this amp? Maybe a Texas Heat and a Swamp Thang? Those are probably the two Eminence speakers I like the most.
I like the sound of both and they'd probably sound good together.
I'm also looking at Weber. I like the looks of the Chicago, Amsterdam, and Thames. Anyone have experience with any of those?

I have had two AlNico Thames and currently have a ceramic Thames. They're okay. A little scooped. They have a ring to them. Never heard real Fanes though, so I don't know if thats a Fane thing. Chicago's seem cool. I love old SRO's, I think they are modeled after those. I still prefer Ampeg V amps through Greenback flavored speakers. Mixing speakers is fine, just try to match the efficiency. Most all Eminence are rated the same dB's, but double check.
Edit: Weber Michigan is modeled after old SRO's. Those I would probably dig. The Chicago is an old Jensen I think. I didn't care for their other Jensen clones I had in my Twin Reverb. Granted, different amps.

I've had great luck going with Eminence in ALL my ampeg cabs (and use V2s and V4s pretty exclusively)...find the flavor(s) you like, match the dBs up and ROCK

You can mix and match for sure, just make sure the ohms are correct for the amp.
If you decide you don't like one of the speakers just swap it out for a match of the one you like.
As far as Weber goes, I've only tried the Michigan 15.
It's a nice speaker and sounds a bit like the Celestion G12T-75s that are in the Marshall 1960 cabs.

Hmm... really leaning toward the Texas Heats.
Anyone know anything about the lil' texas though? Similar? Says its one of those crazy light weight neo speakers. I've neo speakers in a modern traynor cab and they weren't anything special.
Avoid?

Re: Help me pick new speakers for my Ampeg VT-22!
I have one, it's loud (efficient) and lightweight. Fairly neutral (relatively balanced EQ). Handles a lot of wattage (I forget exactly, at least 100 watts), so probably not going to color your tone via breakup. They are a little expensive (maybe 135?) so if you can buy used, then that helps (mine was 70). I love mine, YMMV.Fuzzy Picklez wrote:Hmm... really leaning toward the Texas Heats.

I don't know a lot about speakers but I'm interested in the Jensen Jet series.
