Fudge Tunnel Fuzz?
Just listening to Random Acts of Cruelty. Anyone know what fuzz Newport uses? I'm guessing an older style Muff but his mids aren't that scooped. But hey, what do I know? Anyone?
Great singer too, too bad Cobain copped his style....

A Muff without the mids scooped? Perhaps a Big Muff with the Tone Stack disengaged then?

Re: Fudge Tunnel Fuzz?
Could be. His guitar just so damn creamy and thick. Like swimming in a bowl of custard. I guess that's why he's a pretty in demand producer now. Kind of reminds of ISIS' guitar sound earlier on, but I think that was mostly Sunn amps cranked.

I never knew... Seems like Fudge Tunnel is one of those bands I literally never hear anyone talk about... at least not in recent years.

Yeah, Newport is now Grammy nominated. Works with the Melvins, Mars Volta, The Locust, some other interesting bands. Has a studio in Brooklyn. Yeah FT was great....

You may be interested in my Fudge Tunnel website:

I've been a fan for years, hence the site.
As for what he used on CFOI...he never used fuzz pedals in FT, Hate Songs was (from what I hear), a Boss DS2 into an old Marshall head with a home made speaker cab, he apparently got the impedence wrong or something so the speakers were getting massively overdriven - hence that chainsaw kind of ripping sound on the album. I know he later used some rack gear in live shows, but went back to pedals. I think it was mostly Boss stuff. Even in Theory of Ruin, his post-FT band, he was using Boss, I think again the DS2 and a HM2.
I've kind of avoided ever asking Alex about the gear he used, likewise FT song lyrics...

Agreed... I mean, prior to this thread, I really can't remember the last time they've come up in any conversation.
Neat info., dragline.

Re: Fudge Tunnel Fuzz?
All three of their studio albums are different, so there's no real "introductory" album, however, most fans hold their debut, Hate Songs in E Minor in highest regard. It's loud, noisy, sludgy and ironic. Their second album Creep Diets, was a little more polished, reminded me of Helmet when I first heard it; also drew comparisons at the time to the Seatle scene. Complicated Futility of Ignorance was their closest thing to a "metal" album, and has to be viewed in the context of Alex Newport's involvement in Nailbomb with Max Cavalera of Sepultura.
So take your pick.
But I'd also highly recommend their first two EPs collected on the compilation Fudgecake - more Big Black/Jesus Lizard style post punk stuff.

Thanks for the info dragline. That's very interesting. Too bad its challenging on the equipment to recreate. Always thought he had a great tone.

DAMN but I had forgotten that song. Used to play that track on my old radio show all the time. I really need to get back into the Tunnel... all pun intended...

Re: Fudge Tunnel Fuzz?
Sunshine of Your Love (Fudge Tunnel version) = Best. Cover. Ever.
I know a great story related to Alex's guitar sound from Hate Songs - if you look on Sepultura's Chaos AD, he's credited as "guitar sound/feedback advisor". Because he had become good friends with Cavalera et al, Max asked him to get him the guitar sound he had on Hate Songs, so Alex dragged his old cab down to the studio in Wales, set it up and mic'd it all up as he would have done if he were recording a band, with about three different mics, and some strange setup that made Andy Wallace scratch his head. Anyway, he did that and left Max with basically the same sound he had on Hate Songs.
Then the album came out, and of course it was nothing like it

Re: Fudge Tunnel Fuzz?
The FT version of Sunshine is definitely up there on my list of best covers, no doubt!
I checked out your site, Dragline, and it's great! A really awesome place for people new to FT to learn about 'em. And their version of "Problem Child" is genius! I love that they don't even touch the original riff until the very end.
I had some problems accessing the related / side project pages - are those still under development?
Anyhow, thanks for the great info & resource!
