Alright fuzzheads help a brother out here...

Post by Radiohead625 »

It's been about 3 years since I purchased my Smokey amp and ever since I've been looking for the perfect combination of amp and fuzz to recreate this sound live. I've tried different wattages, different brand amps, and so many fuzz pedals, but I've yet to come close to the sound of this little practice amp. Hell, I even emailed the owner of Smokey amps and he didn't have any clue as to where to start. I was hoping all you fuzz heads around here would have tried the Smokey amp and might have some suggestions because I'm seriously becoming frustrated. :picard:

Why don't you use this amp live?
Just mike it.

For real, Smokeys can drive a 4x12. Use it live.

Sidebar, I love tiny amps like this. I have a Honeytone which sounds outright disgusting cranked with an old battery.

Here's the circuit for the Smokey. I don't know much about building, but I see two caps and a chip. I wonder if you could work that into a pedal.

I was thinking about trying to make it into a pedal, but plugged into an amp it takes on a different tone. This is for obvious reasons because part of the tone is from the little speaker working so hard.

Have you tried Mid-Fi stuff?

Demo Tape Fuzz or the new Overdrive... they can make you sound like youre pushing a small amp real hard.

If you can do vero, build the Systech Harmonic Energiser and stack it into a fuzz with the freq knob up pretty high. Then mess with the Q knob until it sounds right. It's not perfect, but you can get that rattly nasal thing pretty good.

I did that once with a dean markley battery powered thing. Pretty fun.

I played a lot of gigs with one band using one of those mini-Danelectro amps. Mic'd up fine!

If your worried about excess noise from other sources when playing live (the only thing I could think that would be a problem), you could see about getting a little isolation box built for it. If you wanted to get REALLY crazy, build an isolation box for it with a mic in there, and send that signal out into a super-clean solid state keyboard combo amp so it looks like THAT'S the amp generating all that raunch. Confuse the hell outta the other bands!

Did you try hooking it into a cab?
or
The Systech Overdrive can easily nail those tones depending on where you dial in the filter.

Listen to the wisdom of the ancients. Stack a Systech into an OD or a Fuzz. Laser people's brains out with your gnarly garage trash.

One of the sounds I've been able to pull from my Smokey sounds like the "Touch Me I'm Sick" rhythm tone to me. Superfuzz?
