Custom Cab Idea - would it work/sound good?

Post by npfrs »

I've been looking at Marshall, Orange, Dr. Z cabs and thinking maybe there's a custom cab in my future instead...

Right now I have a 4x12 Marshall slant, 2x10 Dr. Z, 2x12 Orange incoming, and looking at 4x12 Marshall regular or a 4x10 Dr. Z....

It got my thinking about an undersized slant cab with 2 12s in the bottom and 2x10s in the top, have it switchable so I can run all 4 together or either just the 12s or 10s (so I can run 2 heads through it as well).

Doable? Done? Thoughts?

I only heard the Matchless cab with 2x10" in the top and 2x12" in the bottom, I thought it sounded like shit (quite bright and shrill) but then again I played three Matchless boxes and they all sounded like shit to me so I don't know (Matchless cabs are probably the worst I played through so far).
That said I'm generally also not a fan of mixmatching speakers, all the amps / cabs I heard that had that going on didn't sound good to my ears.
From that I guess you're either a mixmatched speaker type of guy or you're not. :idk:

Gibson made a cab like this back in the day, pretty sure. It wasn't switchable, but it had 2 10's on top and 12's on the bottom. Look up the Gibson Goldtone cabs. It seems like a pretty sweet idea and I wanted one pretty hard back in the day, but as with everything Gibson it was overpriced as fuck.

It's totally doable, but I don't know what the benefit would be or what it would offer, aside from the fact that it is a different configuration. I don't see there being a size or sound advantage compared to the cabs you already have.

The ability to run a 2x12 and 2x10 with 2 different heads at the same time? I often like to do this already for my base sound so... more compact?

It could work for you, I would recommend isolating the 2 speaker sections. If your concept is just one less cab to tote around while still having a stereo setup it might be just the thing.

Of course the speakers used will have a huge effect as well.
