a/b/y switches, buffers, things like that, i'm used to using a boss tu-2 tuner at or at least toward the beginning of my chain so i can use that to cut signal while i tune up. tuner outs (that i've run into) let signal keep going as you tune.

I like having a tuner that doubles as a killswitch. You can always have a delay or looper after it to keep sounds going while you tune.
I would never tune without cutting the signal, because:

EHX a/b/y & empress buffer+ are what made me wonder about this. both awesome aside from throwing that in there...

Re: what's your take on tuner outs?
I would never play without an output buffer. Even if I was going straight to the amp, any cable over 10 ft and I'd roll with a buffer. I like having a switchable input buffer on the board to make sure that the pickup is loaded consistently.
Boss buffers are rad. Tu-2 at the end of your chain negates the need for any additional buffer.
Tuner out... I don't get that either. Maybe it allows you check tuning while you're playing... ???

Re: what's your take on tuner outs?
I pretty much only use the tuner out on my TU-3 in these scenarios:
1.) When I'm doing intonation. (I want to get a tuner that's more accurate for this, but it is helpful to hear the signal)
2.) I wanna split the signal for something random
3.) It was an accident.

I like the tuner out on the volume pedals, since I can still be muted while tuning and the tuner can just stay on and out of the way.

I'm a fan of tuner outs when it comes to a rack setup so I can keep a cleaner chain, but aside from that I wouldn't bother with one.

Re: what's your take on tuner outs?
I like being able to mute my signal while tuning but I kind of like the other option because sometimes I forget what note I'm playing..... maybe I need two tuners?

I've never had a tuner with a tuner output
When I regularly used a volume pedal I used the tuner output so that I could tune whenever I wanted

I use mine as a mute/kill and can't comprehend why someone would want their audience to listen to them tune.

Re: what's your take on tuner outs?
I've got a Sadowsky Preamp DI with a tuner out on it and I use it. It's kinda cool cause I can have the tuner on all the time for quick checks and help with noticing intonation issues that need to be dealt with. The Sadowsky has a mute so I can tune silently on stage. Special Bonus points; the tuner now requires no output so I can minimize the space between the the tuner and adjacent pedals and that gives me a bit more room to work with.

Here is a little article that details impedance issues when using the tuner out on Volume pedals. http://stinkfoot.se/archives/724
I'm pretty sure that there are mods out there that alleviate these issues (This1smyne does this I'm pretty sure).

i definitely get leaving a tuner on via tuner out on a volume pedal, can leave the tuner on but still mute. i hardly ever use those though...

Re: what's your take on tuner outs?
The tuner outs on most aby switches, etc, simply let you plug into your tuner, without have to run it out to anything...you would always have silent tuning...
Unless you mean the ones on tuners specifically. Like the tu2, which has the option.
I hate hearing people tune on stage.
edit: Shit, I just realized that your dry signal would still be going through the rest of the bypassed circuit
nevermind. Damn, that IS weird.
