Finally making the move to soldered cable

Post by npfrs »

I looked at the shear number of pedals I have on my main board and realized I really need to move to soldered cable for this thing - it's just not cost effective to constantly get cable kits. So I'm trying to source the right connecters/cable and decided upon this...

http://www.redco.com/Switchcraft-228.html for the pedals

http://www.redco.com/Canare-GS-4.html for the cable

http://www.redco.com/Switchcraft-380.html for the MusicomLab connections

Anybody use these particular items before? I'd like to make sure I'm getting the correct stuff.

I've used the Canare GS-4, and GS-6, quite a bit. Good stuff. Be prepared for the tedious process of unbraiding the shield. I use a toothpick.

I haven't used either of the two connectors. The 380 is listed as "no cable clamp." I think I found a drawing of it here. Sure enough, the only thing holding the wire to the connector is the solder. I would think that is a bad idea. Maybe I am missing something.

For ease of assembly, the Neutrik NP2X connectors can't be beat. They have excellent strain relief, too. When you screw the back on, it applies pressure to a series of teeth that grip the cable. They are pretty much all I use.

Good luck!

Mike is right. But. I have the 380s and they are great. The 228s are a pain in the ass though as you have to solder the ground directly to the casing which is both tricky and a little bit questionable on terms of durability. Get pancakes from GLS. They have a solder tab for the ground.
