Putting a super efficient/loud speaker in an AC4TV?

Post by Roseweave »

I was thinking of getting an AC4TV and throwing in a speaker that would bring it close to gigging volumes, or at least give me more headroom. Any ideas at all? I couldn't find an Eminence speaker that was 10", 16 Ohms and have over 100db sensitivity. I know there are other factors with loudness though. Anyone any ideas?

Perhaps uprade the output transformer as well. If you change out the output transformer, you can choose one that has an 8 ohm secondary and use an 8 ohm speaker instead.

Coincidentally... I have a transformer that would suit this application. as i understand correctly el84 single ended amps like the ac4 need an OT with a 5k ohm primary.
i have an edcor 10 watt 5k/8 ohm output transformer. its not an expensive, they make them in the usa but they are cheap cuz they sell direct. I think you can order one from them for about $25 shipped.
now im not telling you this because i want to try and sell something to you though... it might not be worht all the trouble to you.
i dont know what the guts of the ac4 look like, but i can only guess that the edcor transformer is physically larger, so who knows if it will physically fit. BUT using a transformer like that, you COULD use an 8 ohm speaker like you my want to, as well as using an overspecced transformer (10 watts vs. 4 watts) will improved bottom ended and headroom.

but overall, if you want more volume or headroom, it may be best to just get the head and 12" cab, or a different amp even.

Sounds like a plan. Doesn't the transformer give a lot to the wattage? I'll wait see if I get the amp first. I'm not sure what else I'd get in that price range, even adding almost another $100 for a new transformer and speaker it's still cheaper than the cheapest Tiny Terror I can possibly get and more portable. Head and Cab is way pricier. A bigger speaker won't necessarily make it all that louder, it needs the power to drive it(and the sensitivity to be driven).

I don't want to make it much louder though, since I'm getting it primarily for a recording amp. A 100db speaker might do fine.

you can also look up 'p-t31' (part number) on tubesandmore.com

its a generic OT rated at 8 watts with a 5k primary and 8 ohm secondary. its $13.95
its probably a bit smaller than the edcor i have.
i can probably pass the edcor i have (shipped) for the same price you could acquire that P-T31 (shipped from AES) though, and im pretty sure the edcor is better specced as far as frequency response as well. however its all moot if it doesnt physically fit.

the only reason i recommend the head/cab is by the time you replace the speaker and OT in the ac4 you've spent nearly as much as the head/cab combo. which gets you a bigger speaker which can push more air.

of course its the sum of all parts, output tubes, transformer, speaker size, effeciency, etc.
as well as how much you really want the AC4 specifically or if you just want an amp with a certain amount of headroom

maybe check into a used Pro Jr. if its the latter.

No, not really. It'd cost me about €60 to replace the speaker. It'll cost me twice that to get the cab, which won't be any louder, but will be bigger and more awkward to cart around.

maybe the pricing is different there

here the 1x10 combo is $250
add a eminence ragin cajun $70
plus a transformer $15
$335

the head and cab is $370

hey, did you see this eminence legend 10" in 16 ohms?

THat's probably what i'd put in. No idea if it's any good though.
