Same model. '68 with KT88's and a sub'd SS rectifier. It's not enough power on bass to drive my 8x10. Maybe, just barely, a very efficient 2x15, but it would still struggle since I can't even keep up with my Traynor YBA-3 through a loud 2x15, on bass, with my band (this is when I say I miss my Acoustic 4x15). I have to play out of two bass rigs to keep up with the two guitar rigs our guitarist plays. So I've been playing guitar out of the Sunn lately, and it kills with the set up we're playing. A V4, in my opinion, isn't much louder than a fully working and well updated 200s. You're talking maybe two decibel difference between them, perhaps less with perceived volume since the Ampeg will get muddy real quick. But I guess it depends how loud your band is. Again, I know my YBA-3 is louder and cleaner than either of the two V4's I've had and that won't keep up on it's own in my band. I just prefer the tone, simplicity, and quality of the Sunn over any V4. Only thing it lacks is a bit of mids which is why I pair it up with a few pedals that add that. I always felt the V4 was muddy, dark, dull, and a pain in the ass to keep maintained and working properly. But, again, I'm one of the few that just doesn't care for those amps after owning two of them. I never thought they were loud and clear enough on bass either. Again, call me biased, I guess. I'd take a 200s or a YBA-3 over a V4 any day. For reference, I had an early 70's and a late 70's V4, the early one sounding better and gave me less, in fact none at all, trouble with maintenance. So shoot for an early one if you're on the V4 huntvegedge wrote:what model sunn do you have? my 200s is just not enough power for bass.chillerthanmost wrote:I prefer my Sunn over both the V4's I used to have. also today was offered a silverface dualshowman reverb... probably gotta pass on that too..(i just want an ampeg v4!)
Back on subject, that quad reverb is definitely gonna be a pain to carry around. When I had my twin it had Weber clones of Jensens and I couldn't get it to sound too good with pedals and gain at the tuning I play and the gear I was using, but as soon as I swapped the speakers it was excellent and sounded great with fuzz and drive.
(To be fair, if I only had an early V4 and none of the other amps I've owned to compare it with, I would probably be perfectly happy and enjoy them as much as everyone else does. I guess I can only speak when comparing them with the amps I've put it up against and next to, which are usually cleaner or louder or both.)
And I would still pick up that Quad Reverb if I needed an amp, had the cash, and saw that come up in my area. Do it! Do it! Do it!
