Re: Tube amp head and cab's
I'll be honest here, I've never had issues with this. At whatever volume, from quiet to warp speed face melting evil where you measure where you're at by feeling the SPL washing against your hand.
Put the amp on top of the cab, rock out.
The chassis on every tube amp I've ever had apart was rock freaking solid, especially on anything 50w+ that's in the big iron category.
You're not going to magically vibrate the tubes to death. Or mess with the reverb tank doing it. Or make the tape in the tape echo on top of the speaker cab go bad. Or make pixies fly out of my butt.

hahaha, fair enough. Electric guitars and all the associated gear is such a comedy of errors, it's just that we love them so much. WORKS OUT FOR MEEEE!GardenoftheDead wrote:That's what happens when you stick a weak transducer onto a completely non-resonant plank of wood.aen wrote:Actually, tube amps color the FUCK out of your sound. Plug your guitar direct into an audio interface, or hi-fi stereo and you will hear what an electric guitar actually sounds like. Shit. That's why we have tube amps. To make guitars sound good.

Re: Tube amp head and cab's
as someone who maintains fighter planes i should say that just because something is designed in a novel way, like the use of tubes in the MiG-25, doesn't mean it's well engineered and isn't totally broke dick all the time. they were included to countermeasure EMPs not to be resilient. russian airfields are awful as are the airfields in lybia, syria, and iraq (circa foxbat ops era) and pilots, esp in iraq where they treated flying fast jets like a country club, could give a shit if they bring the plane back with a broke radar, or break it with an excessively hard landing. shit breaks in crazy ways with decent pilots, and better designed airplanes anyhow. also, in the era prior to in flight data, those ruskies were probably over-Ging the shit out of the foxbats (not hard, since it's a brick with two rockets) and i'm sure those avionics dudes were swaping tubes between gos.in_sherman wrote:they built much of the avionics of the mig 25 foxbat fighter jet using tubes. basically, even though they're old technology they should be sturdy enough for any amp. just take a look at this chart of the effect of vibration energy thermodynamics on your amp.
it's science. you can't argue with it. plus, tone is in the fingers

Re: Tube amp head and cab's
Head on cab always is how I roll. It's crossed my mind that comstant cab vibrations could possibly cause issue over the long haul but then I forgot about that concern altogether and nothing is broken so I figure why worry. I have a feeling my amps take far more abuse due to simple transport and hasty load in/out over the years. Shit's been rugged thus far.
Also, Donny makes a fine point with the spring reverb example. If that thing is quiet, it's apparent those vibrations aren't cause for concern.
And yeah, I'd think a combo would worsen the situation as opposed to separate head and cab but I'm not a fan of most combos tho so again, no worry of mine.

Combos have worse problems then tubes.. like everything else vibration apart...Holy Schnikes wrote:And yeah, I'd think a combo would worsen the situation as opposed to separate head and cab but I'm not a fan of most combos tho so again, no worry of mine.

This. This whole thing has never even crossed my mind.theavondon wrote:I think, and this may just be me, but this might be a case of overthinking things?
Or, I'm a luddite that doesn't care about his gear.
To be honest, I've always thought it was weird seeing cabs without a head on top.

Hey! Let's talk about serious thing. We're gonna talk about guitar, dude.

Re: Tube amp head and cab's
Thats what I wondered, if people did it because that's what's familiar, without giving any thought to any potential for improving the sound by removing the amp from a vibrating cabinet. you know, a combo amp is designed to be what it is, but pulling the amp from the cab and playing changes the sound for the better. does it matter??foomanfat wrote:This. Re: Tube amp head and cab's
then there is, loading and unloading them, vibrations from being in moving vehicles, temperature changes from being taken in and out side as well...
