Noisemaker Effects Overdrive Recommendation?

Post by chutneyfarmer »

Heya folks,

I'm looking for a low gain overdrive to play some jangly noisy garage rock stuff. Think Ty Segall, Bass Drum Of Death, Thee Oh Sees type stuff. Been thinking about trying out something from Noisemaker effects as I'm fairly poor at the moment and I'd also simply like to try out a brand I've never used before.

I know the Dead Hipster gets a lot of love, but there aren't too many demos of it out there. The Beach Bum looks and sounds really appealing, but there's pretty much nothing about it on the internet in terms of demos and stuff. There's also the Soviet Overdrive which sounds nice but yet again, not too many demos out there. There's a new version of it released too with a diode lift switch.

Anyone here have first hand experience that would be willing to share opinions, demos etc?

I also really enjoyed the Crush Fuzz, and it could be used as an overdrive by reducing the gain of whatever you're hitting it with. It wasn't crazy over the top fuzzy to begin with. Like a mix of od/fuzz.
Sorry, I don't have any experience with anything else, and it is hard to find examples of his stuff :idk:

I loved my crush fuzz when I had it. The soviet it very warm, wouldn't really recommend it for jangly stuff.

Dead Hipster is really light OD and adds some brightness back to the tone if you run it after Dark Fuzzz or something... I have to turn it almost all the way up or Donny Style to get it to start to sound like a OD or Fuzzz... It stacks well with almost anything and looks awesome, I know some other peeps here have had positive results with the Crush like these gentlemen above... Contact him here in the Shark Tank, it's always been pleasurable and I still need a Sludge Maker...

I often forget volume and gain knobs exist.

Definitely this. Matt is a good dude, and he'll definitely help you figure out what'll fit best.

You know, I really wanted to like it but I hated my dead hipster. It only really worked at a volume that was way above what my amp was. I was looking for an OD to push my '71 Super Lead that I dimed with a MV. Just made it too loud for my uses. Sounded nice, but I might have not known how to use it yet. It was a few years ago.

TL;DR:

Nver listen to anything I say

So last night I went to see a horror movie double bill of Night Of The Living Dead and Creepshow. Of course part of the fun of a night like that is sneaking in copious amounts of alcohol tondrink during the movies. Especially since it started at 10:30 and went on til after 2. I mean I'm goet old and can't party with the kids like I used to, but I still try to give it a shot now and again. So, we meet up beforehand for a couple of pints, and had one while we were in the queue for the movie. I had decided to bring two bottles of rum and coke to drink during the night which were both consumed with enthusiasm. I kinda regret not buying something savoury to eat coz man that drink gets real sweet real quick! Still it did the job nicely. I managed to stay awake during both movies too, probably thanks to the caffeine in the coke. Really enjoyed both films too. NotLD was actually the Tom Savini remake, which although not as good as the original, is more campy and more fitting in with the fun vibe of the double bill.

Tl:dr I got drunk last night and bought a Dead Hipster.
