Guys with lots of dirt onboard

Post by DarkAxel »

I changed the way I do things a bit... but still trying to get used to it

decided to get more versatile with dirt, so currently I have a

boost
a super-fucked up fuzz sound via my Fingerprint with both gain and texture cranked, very spitty and broken sounding
Mini with the bias a bit backed off so it's nice and gritty
Fix'd fuzz for a nice fuzzy distortion, long sustain, lot's of character, go-to pedal for solos
Elements for an awesome dynamic distortion, kind of hot-rodded marshall-ish i guess? Maybe tiny bit of ORL-style... go-to pedal for rhythm

however i feel like the Fix'd and the Elements overlap a bit, different textures, the Fix'd is definitely very fuzz-like, but still... not that drastically different i guess

what do you guys with lots of dirt do? Do you have everything set for a different sound? Or do you also have these tiny textural differences?

more of a discussion thread than "looking for a" thread, interested in your approach :)

I have A ton of dirt on my board, Pharaoh, Ape blaster, ritual, Oath,(Destroyer) LSTR, ocd, (burial chamber) Quantum mystic, elements.

I set most of them to low gain and use them to flavor the overall tone and texture. If I want it tigher I'll hit more od or the ape blaster, looser, add some more fuzz or take stuff out of the chain. Stacking a bunch at low gain seems to give a bigger sound than just blasting one of them. Elements is currently set nearly clean as a boost at the end of the chain.

I also use a loop box to control the pedals and I put volume controls in the loops to make it more manageable. It all looks like this right now-

I SUPPOSE I SHOULD ANSWER THIS.
My bass channel is a bunch of different sounds mashed together. Everything is set quite differently, but I have it set in a way that when cascaded they also sound GREAT, so it's different stackings that give other awesome sounds. So, experiment. Set stuff WAY differently for a change, and stack around. You might like what you find!

i do something similar to what skully does - use each dirt pedal for a different sound but set so that they sound rad together.
i don't have a ton of dirt on my board, but i use one as a bright boost/slight breakup, one as a dark drive, one as a bigger washy fuzz and another as a weird zappy fuzz.

Different fuzz sounds suit different songs and styles, so I'm constantly tweaking the controls on my fuzz boxes - I never really set 'em and forget 'em. I think it's the same as any pedal you have on your board: lots of experimentation so you know exactly what each pedal can do and can dial in the sound in your head when you want it. But I do agree that keeping the gain low and stacking fuzz into fuzz is a great approach. I really like running a Rat pedal with low to mid gain (distortion) as a kind of boost to 'goose' pretty much any other fuzz box.

Only have 3 on there right now, Fuck set as a cleanish overdrive (always on) Fredric Effects Super Unpleasant Companion set to full tilt Super Fuzz, then Musket set much much louder than the other two. Gets all spitty and broken up when it's fuck---Super Fuzz---Musket. Gets all washy when it's just Fuck---Musket. Use the Super Fuzz for quiter, but still fuzzy rhythm parts.

We're the same person.

I don't run a ton of dirt, but I have the Singing Tree for sounding warm and aggro, Skullz's DIRGE 250 for the cold and aggro, the Supercollider for the doom, and the 'Stashe for the space fuzz.

Generally they go in pairs--Dirge>Supercollider and Tree>Stashe.

I have yet to make the necessary cables for it but I'm using a Wounded Paw blender to blend them.

For my main tone I'll have:

-SS/BS Sparkle Motion going in to a custom Eau Claire Thunder/Robot Devil. Super thick and noisy.
-Fuzzhugger Phantom Ring V2 into a Fuzzhugger Great Wall for those super fuzz style tones
-Arcane Death Dealer for just a nice thick, clear tone, very flexible as well.
---All of these will be blended together as my main dirt tone and then will go out to the rest of the board.

Then when I want something really nasty I run an Arc Effects DAM FR-70 clone into my Dirge Tonal Fucking Destruction.

So if you can, stack and/or blend fuzzes/dirt!

Then when

Heh, nice to see so many people are into stacking! :)

I love to boost the Fingerprint and then add a Mini on top, it's super focused-sounding but with more body to the spit

However... the Elements, even though I don't have the gain set up super high, and the Fix'd don't really take stacking that well... i mean Mini into either of them sounds awesome, BUT they get quite noisy with the Jazzmaster, so one must be very careful not to stop playing

In that respect I'd recommend a volume pedal, funny enough it's probably one of the most go to dirt related pedals on my board. :)

This is a good idea.

Never tried it though, I kind of like all of the noise :idk:

Midfi glitc computer> midfi what? > midfi random number generator> Marshall dsl. Glitch is set for octaves for a bass synth sound in my loops, when stacked with the what of number generator it fucking sounds so awesome and on before my drive channel when on its very synth like. The what is my secret weapon fuzz. Usually I only turn on with my drive channel on, it's very sputtery and awesome and unexplainable, deff my secret weapon. The random number generator is fun as shit. Making chords and listening to them blow the fuck up! Usually I like my dirt/fuzz options to fill awesome rolls in my loops and have add a completely different textual sound whenever engaged.
