Unconventional Delay Pedals

I keep flipping delays...even really great ones. And I'm just as bad with reverbs. The only keeper for me has been the endangered audio AD4096 and I don't even use it like a delay. The 4096 has a infinite mode that puts harmonic wash underneath your dry signal with a subtle echo and I just use that constantly. It's the best sound I have ever found - and I have to say, the conventional delay in the 4096 is also amazing. I tempted to just decide I've found my sound with this pedal and maybe use two but before I go there, I wanted to ask some questions of you fine people.

What are your favourite unconventional delays? I'm thinking of pedals that do harmonic and rhythmic things that are great and musical and not just edge style repeats. Hoping to hear more about stuff like the Particle, Goodbye 24, Rainbow Machine and others I don't know about. What do you like about them?

What do you use pedals like these for? I tried a Particle the other day and was blown away by the reverse mode. I started to think that maybe I dig delays but not as rhythmic repeaters - more as ways to use delay feedback and other sounds.

Knowing that I'm pretty much in love with the analog, woozy sounds of the 4096, would it be stupid to use two? Or should I grab a Particle or something else to compliment it? Does something like a Timeline offer me more cool stuff to explore? Thoughts?

Any feedback, ideas, pictures of Olivia Munn, biscuit recipes or dancing peanut gifs would be much appreciated.

Ibanez Digital Modulation Delay DML10 or DML20 - has the most extreme range of pitch modulation I've ever heard, i love it

Ibanez DE7 (in echo mode) - i set it like a slapback but with the repeats cranked and level down a bit so it sorta hovers under your playing, sounds awesome

EHX SMMH is great for multi-tap, reverse and mod delays

The Strymon El Capistan can do some weird stuff if you take the time to work out all the secondary knob functions. My favourite delay pedal for sure.

I know some people swear by the Digitech Timebender and Boss PS-3, too

The Particle is cool for sure. Had it for months now and I'm still finding new stuff, I'm a big fan of reverse mode, the pitch stuff is great as well. The freeze function is very cool, although a little tricky to use sometimes.

That's about 10 pedals I hadn't thought of. The Skychord is pretty intruiging and I've often looked at Empress and Diamond pedals and wondered if I just need something with a basic knob configuration to tweak and explore (TWSS). I also like the look of the DMB lunar echo too.

So if it came down to looking at delays that are better at doing ambient and harmonic sounds, what would be relatively self-contained and simple to use? I'm a bit of a dumbarse with complex interfaces and found that excuse for dumping a Timefactor a while back. If a pedal needs a aux controller and an expression pedal bought to get the most out of it, I call bullshit I'm also on bass if that's going to make any difference.

I've recently tried a new DMM and a modified DL4 and have to say, they sounded pretty thin compared to the 4096. Does that make me an analog snob? I don't care about it either way. Good is good. I just want something that sounds thick and full and warm. Also not as keen on the detune type functions as it's hard to slot into my band without being solo'ed.

Any other options or ideas?

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the GB24 it does so many things. It does the Rainbow Machine and Organizer better than both of them do it. You can also do some chorus tones, octave up, octave down. and it has a really unique timbre. and it's cheap.

i own most of the moogerfooger's and they are all great pedals. i've got the mf-104z w/spillover mod, and if the 104m is anywhere near the soundquality and functionality i'd say its worth the asking price. you don't need to use expression pedals with moogerfooger's, easy to set and forget. i personally find that using expression/cv pedals with them only enhances the experience as they allow you to adjust every parameter in real time.

also the skychord cloudbuster is fucking AMAZING.

I also like the look of the DMB lunar echo too.

Big fan of the Lunar Echo, you can feed fuzz into the Lo-Fi Wrecked mode and it will make you go jwar did a nifty demo of the thing on bass.

Yes, sylnau and univalve will agree. The waveforms allow for fun times. Univalve does some sick stuff with it using MIDI. The Moog is awesome, but you could easily get the Lunar Echo and whatever else is mentioned so far for the same price and still go out for pizza.
