I have no idea how he makes it sound good. The distortion on a 450 sounds super weird to me whenever I tried to play it like that. Put an OCD in front and it's pretty gnarly though.
I got it p close with the knob EQs set around noon, and the slider EQs set to a giant V.

I love DFA, but when I saw them on the reunion tour it wasnt the tightest. Shitty venue though.

For what its worth, I'd just say turn your amp up all the way and then start making adjustments. The chorus can make it sound closer. I dont know if he used it, but my old bassist would when we'd jam that stuff and it made it a bit closer.

Me either.
And now because of this thread they're pretty much all I listened to yesterday.
I love this forum.
And his bass tone.
So much inspiration!

From a pic I saw, he looked to be using a Peavey Musician which shouldn't run you more than $100.

I think a lot of his recorded tone magic comes from multi tracking bass. Frequently sounds like there's one track of normal bass tone to bring sufficient low end thump and tightness. The dirt track sits right on top of it and the two together sound crushing!

That said, I wish he would've joined QOTSA. :(
DFA+QOTSA would have been epic :doom:

Definitely this. I had an ACC 450, and it only sounded like JFK in that I was playing bass and it was distorted. I also agree with comments about using a chorus to try and cop the sound of multiple basses/tracks.

And FWIW.... I read an interview about him a loooooong time ago and he was talking about his gear and trying to be all mystical and shit by not saying exactly what he was using, but he was saying that he didn't use any amp/pedal distortion and claimed that he was pushing 1k watts through 500w speakers (or something stupid like that) and it was all speaker distortion. I kinda think that's bullshit, though.

There's a 360 preamp kit. I can remember who makes it but someone was selling a completed unit months back.

I'm not sure how different it is from the 450. It sounded great though.

I'd be inclined to belive it. I remember reading an old article online where he say's he uses the cheapest 10" speakers he can find, since he's always blowing em out. I read something about a cocked wah pedal too, but I'm not so sure about that.
