Underrated "Vintage" fuzz pedals?

Post by hazelwould »

We know of the Superfuzz, Big Muff, Fuzz Faces, Tone Benders...

But what are some underrated classic fuzz boxes?

For me, the holy trinity of vintage-type (where clones are available and plentiful, or reissues exist etc as well) fuzzes are the Ampeg Scrambler (very mean octave up fuzz with a clean blend), Fender Blender (octave up), and the venerable MXR Blue Box.

Roland Bee Baa would be the runner up no questions asked.

I have little love for Muff-derived circuits, but I could not live happily without my unholy trinity.

Honey Special Fuzz. Although rare, who can deny a Superfuzz sound, with an autowah mixed in for that little extra kick.

And of course, the venerable Superfuzz.

WEM Project V fuzz, another great one.

Foxx Tone Machine. Excellent octave.

Buzzaround should be listed with the closely related Dizzy Sound.

Fuzzrite and the related Orpheum. I'm not a doom guy, but to my ears the Orpheum would work pretty well for teh heavies.

That's not the first time I've heard hte Fuzzrite and Orpheum compared. What's the story with these two?

The worms and the spice, what is the relationship

I'm not a good enough fuzz folklorist to know the history accurately, and I haven't compared schematics in a while, but the Orpheum sounds like a Fuzzrite with a mid-scoop.

BTW, here's a video that does comparisons of DIY builds of almost all the early germanium fuzzes: http://tonefiend.com/guitar/fuzzdetective/ Joe did a follow-up one-off on the super-rare germanium version of the FY-2 Companion fuzz, too.
