This might seem like a silly question (Used Guitar Center)

Post by dallasisacowboy »

I'm ordering an amp online from the used guitar center website for the first time and I was wondering whether the "pro coverage protection" is worth it? If I don't get the coverage, that's just 20 bucks going towards beer money. Although, I'd like to see my gear get here without any issues.

Thanks for your time.

I've found that programs like that are just a way for retailers to get a little more of your money for doing nothing. If you're really afraid that the thing you're buying is going to break within a year I guess you could get it but otherwise I'd save the money.

I bought a used G&L guitar online from a GC in Texas (I think?) and had it shipped to my local store. Arrived in great shape w/o extra coverage.

If you plan on gigging a lot and carrying it around, letting buds play it, then yeah go for it. If not, then probably not. Pro Coverage for used gear is a little different than new gear. It is only one year as opposed to two or three... one year is not a lot of time to fuck gear up.

What's shipping usually like when having guitars or amps sent to you from the used site?

Ive ordered twice from guitar center used online and both went smooth. My only gripe is how little description you get on each item. The first time I ordered a Marshall 2x12 that is in a 4x12 sized cab. Shipping was only $15 to $20 bucks to my local store but one of the wheels was broken out of the bottom of the cab sitting in the bottom of the box. Easy fix for a little while as I just turned the base slightly and drilled new holes but last week on the way to a show the wheel popped out again. I usually keep the cab on its side when playing so again not a huge deal. Second time was last week which is where I will for once praise guitar center. I ordered a Traynor head and again shipped it to my local store for only $13. Went to pick it up and unpacked it at my practice space and let me just say there was more packing material than amp which was amazing. They had the tubes bubble wrapped out of the amp individually and one of those blue foam shipping blocks that kinda conforms on each side. The head itself was wrapped in a few layers of bubble wrap and then filled with packing peanuts. Other than the vague descriptions on the site I usually prefer this to sites like craigslist where your giving a stranger cash and hoping for the best. At least guitar center gives you a few days to decide if you really want it and if any issues arise you have some where to go with it. They also get some good deals if you hawk the site regularly. Saw an Ampeg V4 for $300 the other day which disappeared in a few hours.

They pack very well. And the no questions asked return will cover it to get it to you in one (or more pieces).

They're my first stop for used stuff these days living in the middle of nowhere - shipping is dirt cheap, and if I don't like it, I can ship it to the nearest GC which is only a couple hundred miles away for the return. Cheaper than any other online retailer in that department.

I *always* call and talk to somebody at the store where I'm buying it from though - get an in-hand description or to negotiate on the price a little.

I just got a gt-10 off them and it came with the wrong power supply. They asked If I wanted to send it back and I said no, as I had a power supply at home. Still kinda lame though. wish they had offered to get the correct one sent out. I probably could have made more of a fuss though.

The pro coverage is a warranty. When you get it, your betting you will break it they are betting you wont. Your paying 150-200$ so that when you do break it you dont have to buy a new guitar. But if you do break it, break it right.

Don't email. Just call.

You can ask questions, haggle, etc.

They're used to calls.

They're not in the 21rst century yet and email is, well, a non-priority in my experience.

For sure, definitely call. It is a slow month right now, right before holiday season, so haggling is a bit easier.
