Post by contraterrene »

can anyone point me in the right direction for guitars for a 10 yr old, and an 8yr old? i want to buy a couple for Christmas presents.
should i buy shorter scale, or 3/4 size, or whatever? $100 each is my limit, so i dont even know if its feasible....

Not sure if they still make them, but you used to be able to get mini squier strats for around $100

I got one of these for my younger kids, 3 and 5.

It's an outstanding instrument. I actually enjoy playing it quite a lot. Would recommend without hesitation. Might be small for a bigger kid but I am very impressed with the quality.

ha, i must not really love my kids...
thanks guys. mini squiers might be cool. my kids are always asking to use my pedals and stuff, so i definitely want electrics. when they outgrow them they can hand them down to their younger bros. i have 3.75 sons (wife is due dec 5th with #4), so i hope they get some use ;)

They're $150 and acoustic, but these are pretty great:

I'd go with a Guitulele. Or however they're spelled. I've played a few at work and they sound really good. For 3/4 sized electrics, there are mini strats for around $129 I believe, maybe $99.99.

kosta, have you actually played one of these?

I've been thinking about grabbing one for my nephew for his next birthday.

Would like to hear from someone with hands on experience prior to purchase.

I might have to look into this at some point. Really been liking the idea of getting a balalaika to play around with, but the shape seems like it would be uncomfortable for seated playing. Could possibly be pretty cool for a pseudo balalaika. hmm...

I would just buy your kids whatever you can get your hands on. It doesn't really matter, honestly with guitar I wouldn't bother getting a smaller one, maybe with bass though. Go to pawn shops and find a cheap shitty guitar that plays decently. Doesn't have to sound good at all, I couldn't distinguish good and bad tone when I was first learning because I hadn't developed an ear for it.

I think this statement:

is at odds with this one:
