Civil War Muffs

After having owned and played a bunch of muffs over the past few years, I thought I had tried everything there was to try with Muffs... until yesterday...
I tried a clone of a Civil War Muff, but with boosted mids and went crazy. I swore I would never own another muff, but I guess I feel differently now.

I searched the forum a bit and couldn't really find much about them. Have you guys used them? Opinions? I know there are some modern recreations (wren and cuff come to mind), but what have you guys used? I dont really want to spring for an original since they're sort of impractical and rare. Also, a mids knob or switch or something is a major bonus.

For what it's worth, lately I'm running a (weird) telecaster, rickenbacker 620, epi sheraton,through either an Ampeg VT-22 + VHT 2x12 w/v30s or a Sunn Sceptre and a Sunn 212 with old eminence speakers in it.

Wren and Cuff is cool, the Musket is really cool, as is the Grey 'Stashe-which isn't a straight up clone.

Civil War is definitely a tasty Muff flavor.

I've had the Musket and SST and sold both. Regular russian muffs dont really do it for me. Maybe the one I tried is just extra special?

It was #2 of 3 of a special run of these muff monstrosities made by Stunt Monkey FX. Small Canadian company. My buddy picked it up and I'm sold on it. Apparently he's not making anymore, so I'm looking at other options before I start pestering him.

I know nothing about zee Stunt Monkey. I did forget that Stomp Under Foot makes one, too. Probably because I haven't tried it.

The Tym Civil War is the nicest one I've played. No mids switch on it though.

I've got a V7 Tall Font Muff (pretty much a Civil War in a green enclosure) and I think honestly it's THE best muff circuit I've tried. I've built clones to try to emulate it but nothing can get close to it, it's just got this crazy heavy sound to it. The only pedal that has ever gotten close to it was the Earthbound Audio Super Collider in terms of voicing (and then some)

I had an early tall font too. My dad bought it for me at a garage sale. He talked the lady down from $5 to $2. It was the greatest sound I've ever heard in a pedal.

I love the Civil War Muffs,
I have actually had a few of them over the years, and to tell you the truth, the best one I had was this transitional one in the green box:


the regular Civil Wars were super smooth with that HUGE bottom end, but they weren't that gritty on the high end of things...
This green one has the crunchyness of the Tall Font Muffs + the big LOWS of the Civil War.

I stupidly sold it, but then was able to re-buy it a year later

i had an original civil war that i stumbled upon for a stupidly good deal some years ago. unfortunately i had to sell it during a period of extreme financial hardship, but i really loved it. so huge and very rich. none of the clones i've played quite nailed it, but some do get very close. sometimes i felt that the mid scoop was a problem, but then i started stacking it with an ocd in front of it and that was truly amazing. solved the issue and was a heavenly sound. one of my favorite super heavy tones that i've had.

hmmm...

I'm considering just trying to get someone to build me one. I need those mids.
I don't want to have to find the right overdrive to pair with it or run an eq, but I guess I could run both in a loop.
Maybe I'll just build one?

Build that shit! Do it on breadboard first so you can actually hear it before you make it. And also any changes you make on the breadboard can be heard instantly. If you have the one you like you can compare yours to it and do the fine tuning. Not easy but not impossible.
