A "what should I get" thread.

Post by xrleroyx »

Looking at getting a few pedals, treating myself after getting a new job and selling/trading my DM-2.

I've always wanted a crazy pedal. POGS and stuff have always gotten my attention. So, I'm getting something of that sort.

One of these:
Rainbow Machine
POG2
Micro POG
There's also a HOG for sale near me in Michigan for a good price.

I run through an OR-15 with a jazzmaster, strat, and a 7 string. I play mainly shoegaze-y stuff, but a few tunes I run clean with kind of a RHCP and PIXIES vibe.

My cab is a gutted Fender Twin cab with Eminence speakers.

I already have a ring mod, 2 big muffs, a wah, phaser and I'm also looking into getting a different analog delay after getting rid of the DM-2.

Basically, what do? What's the most fun/useful?

I'm looking to add textures, and I like the idea of presets (HOG and POG2) but the micro is cheaper, and the Rainbow Machine is unique.

Just looking for opinions. :!!!:

EHX Memory Boy is a great analog delay, and the modulation is good fun.

Also, look into a Boss PS-3 for weird pitch shifting.

That's funny, I think I'm picking up a memory boy in a day or so. I had a memory toy awhile ago and made a few instrumental tracks for my girlfriends senior film project last year. Really great sounding delays.

The Memory Toy only has the mod on/off switch, but the Memory Boy has a rate toggle, wave toggle and a depth knob. Basically, anything past like 3:00 on the depth knob goes into noise territory. Square wave mode rules for that too.

I don't know the HOG/POG family that well, so I'm going off of stuff on my own lust radar.

It's really a very different thing, but if you got the bucks, a MIDI MuRF can do crazy crazy stuff. When you mention presets, it came to mind, and there's free patch editor software for Mac and Windows. The concept didn't knock me out but the demos did.

If you want a different delay, a Digitech Timebender or a Red Panda Particle could open up some territory. Timebender has some light duty harmonizer stuff on board, and the Particle, well, is the Particle.

See if you can get a Montreal assembly Goodbye 24. It's like a rainbow machine only waaaay more versatile, with both nicer sounds and whackier sounds. Not yet made of unobtanium.

Wow, that Particle is awesome. I wish there were a possibility for presets since there are so many usable sounds.

Yeah, great sounding pedal. Wish I could access soundcloud from work, but the youtube demos sounded cool, if a bit low quality. But that's youtube.

his new version is supposed to be more hifi with 8 seconds as opposed to the 2 seconds on the older model, which I have. I want the v2 to compliment my v1 and have the best of both worlds. tried to bond with the rainbow and liked it but not for what I play really for what it's meant to be. and then the particle, but this just does exactly what I want really. so more is good. heh. bring it on scott! he's got a paperclip project that sounds interesting also.

Emailed him about the upcoming models. They're so inexpensive too. Might have to give Montreal Assembly another look.

Also, bit of advice, don't type "Montreal Ass" into google at work, and expect the search engine to know what you're talking about.

Not analog, but I just got a Disaster Transport Sr., this thing is a texture machine. It also doesn't have presets but its actually really simple to dial in and the expression options make it easy to fine tune on the fly.

I would add the Ring Thing to this list. wasn't too impressed at first, but presets, tuneable modulator, octaves, whammy/expression, weird noises... this thing's a winner. all in a grungy lofi digital that has some character.
