This was my dad's old bike. He bought it sometime in the early eighties and it's definitely seen some better days. The rims are warped just enough that the brakes don't work, but not so much that I can't ride it. Makes things interesting that way. It could probably use a cleaning (or maybe a full restoration) too.

Uni your bike is sexy.

I need to get a bike. I'm moving into a more urban community in a month and riding everywhere is very desirable. The idea of a single speed is very appealing to me for low maintenance / cost, but would anyone try to sway me into getting something like a 5/10 speed? I'd like to hear some arguments. I don't think I'd be riding hills or trails on a consistent basis but it might happen.

Also, what do you guys do differently for your winter bikes aside from the tires?

EDIT: the idea of a fixed gear kind of scares the crap out of me, but these is on my local CL:

Big, fat tires with not too much air in it, seat lower (to touch the ground if necessary) and mudguards when there is snow laying around. If there is no snow i always ride with the fixed (the cream color one):

But even with the mudguards i get pretty dirty - so i always change clothes at work. But i ride through the woods to work, so there is a bit more dirt than in the city.
If there is iced roads (happens max. 2 times a year), i don't ride - it always ends in disaster.

The second one looks like a freestyle fixie. With that kind of gear you don't want to ride longer distances...
I wouldn't ride a bike without mudguards on a daily basis (see above).
Why i ride fixies: i like the way how you ride with it (continuously), different way of riding a bicycle for sure (like skiing vs. telemark). You can accelerate and decelerate pretty good and imho there is only need for a front tire brake. You have almost no issues with these bikes and the maintanace cycle is simple and rarely. Amount of tools is minor, the material to carry along for a breakdown is also little. If there are no hills around, i think this works best for me...

my single speed

I've been sucked back into the thought of having a single speed over the past two days. Researching built bikes and parts for building my own and shit . I have a road bike (old Fuji Monterey) that I picked up for $100 and even though it's rough round the edges it works pretty well.

But I'm almost dead set on picking up a Marin Dominican just cause of the ease / simplicity / ability to handle slightly rougher terrain / COOL FACTOR.



It's got a flip flop hub, which I'd likely keep in the freewheel position. There's one on ebay (brand new) for less than $400. I want it now but I'm not sure if this is just a fad for me to blow some dough on. I did ride my road bike in the same gear all day, set to a single speed type ratio, and it was pretty awesome. Buh.

What's the point of a single speed? Or is it just really flat where you guys live?

I bike primarily around my city, there are some hills but not that many. They are not the best for every situation i.e. lots of hills. Theoretically they are low maintenance + lighter. I want one for the simplicity and aesthetic because it's trendy right now, duh it would be cool to have an "easy" first build if I decide to assemble one myself.

More times than not I have seen people struggle up hill with their gears (or straight up walking them!) while I cruise on past with a single speed :shrug:
but I mostly contribute that to lack of experience.

Been trying to get a trail bike lately, but I keep missing out on good deals cause I hesitate. So many used treks & specialized in good shape around here.

Yeah, I'm also under them impression that only having one gear tailors your riding and you learn how to make the most out of that gear. I don't know for sure since I don't have that much experience with just using one gear, though. But it is an attractive thought.
