starving a mutron iii?

Post by pigmaker »

i want to try this out, but not put the pedal in danger obviously
it's got the spot for 2 9v's on the bottom
it's in really good shape as far as these old mutron iii's go. the power supply is the original. it was tuned and gone through by richard lingenberg

I've got nothing for you on this, but I'm curious:
what do you think you're gonna get when you starve the circuit and what makes you think you're gonna damage it if you do?

i dont know anything about pedal electronics, i was just putting that out there as a "please let me know if i might break my expensive pedal"

i heard a starved mutron iii was used on sir psycho sexy, which could be baseless hearsay bullshit, but id like try it out if i can do it safely

honestly, I seriously doubt you can damage any pedal by starving it ;)

well if it can take batteries you can starve it. when the batteries drain so with the voltage.

Check with someone more knowledgeable than me for sure, but yeah, I don't think giving it less than the rated voltage will hurt it. If I had to guess - I bet it will probably work to some extent down to about 12v. You could either use run-down 9v batteries (you can check them with a multimeter to see what their actual voltage is.) Or you could use a variable AC transformer (variac) to sag it if you have a plug for it. It might sound pretty cool. I know when I sag one of my Korg MS-20 filter clones it sounds pretty badass. Gets all warm and growly. Curious to hear what the Mutron does. I wonder if the envelope will work correctly without full voltage?

yeah this is gonna be fun. it will probably make the mutron iii more gainy, i just hope it's in a good way. if youve never used one before, there's a gain knob which also controls the sensitivity of the envelope.

You won't hurt anything by starving it.

Can't imagine it sounds good, but report back if you try it.

Starving it definitely won't hurt, but I haven't tried much other than fuzz pedals that actually does interesting stuff when starved, most seem to just stop working pretty quickly below their rated voltage. Can't hurt to try though!

Not sure, but I don't think those Mu-trons are true bypass. So, I'd guess it might be a true bypass switch.

Bet you'd probably find an answer somewhere on a Grateful Dead forum. Or you can PM dubkitty, he might know.
