Well said. I think both electric and acoustic drone have a lot to offer and my current project isn't strictly drone but it has drone elements and we use an electric guitar, bass and drums as well as a violin and cello and a synth. One thing I'd like to see in more drone bands, especially live are more extreme dynamics. A room full of warm volume can be a magical, experience where the volume is so overwhelming but not harsh that you find that point where your mind just finally turns off and just submits. Embracing the quiet moments though can build a lot of tension and really set up that wall of wonderful, powerful noise.Blackened Soul wrote:Drone is about droning. Volume and effects don't matter, they just help you get the sound you want but you can drone on acoustic instruments. A big part is you have to want to play music that is of a drone nature.

I agree, but I'm not a big super pile of amps on ten playing one chord for 20 min person anyway, I don't even use amps for any of my drone stuff.

I was definitely forgetting a major part of Drone... DAT FEEL. Thanks for pointing that out, I can totally get behind the acoustic/other instruments thing. Drone doesnt need to be massive stacks and FUZZ.
Thats a great way to look at it.

No amps? On one of the songs I heard on bandcamp it really sounds an awful lot like there's delay on the bass. It was just through my phone so I couldn't tell if it was an electric or actoustic bass but either way, even if you're running through someone else's amps (like the PA) that's not really the same thing as a purely acoustic instrument like what you would hear from your typical unamplified symphony. I'm not knocking it....both certainly have their virtues in my book.Blackened Soul wrote:I agree, but I'm not a big super pile of amps on ten playing one chord for 20 min person anyway, I don't even use amps for any of my drone stuff.

I use a LOT of reverb on mixes and delay as well yes but what I mean by no amps is I record direct or use a mic on a acoustic instrument, I'm talking about stuff like sunn where the sound IS amps, not that I don't use electric basses and guitars and pickups and effectslouderthangod wrote:No amps? Also, fuzzbreax who're reading this should check out the Koorikuma stuff. It's fine cuts of drone in the kosmiche yawn-of-the-universe variety, loads of low end with generous glacial wind chime accoutremonts.

I got all of the stuff off your band camp....very cool. Do you ever try to perform this live? Are your songs well worked out ahead of time or is there an improvisational element to them?

No I haven't yet, I've thought about it but I'm still unsure if I could come close to reproducing what I do to a point where I'd be happy and I'd say it's over 90% improvisational, even with all the tracks I do on some of them, such as falling off a cloud, it was pretty much me messing around with a phaser and wah for 40 minutes with no thought about anything at all going into it, it just happened to get recorded but even that wasn't intentional at the time

I agree with a lot of things on this page, but especially this.louderthangod wrote: Embracing the quiet moments though can build a lot of tension and really set up that wall of wonderful, powerful noise.
Problem is people talk too fucking music at shows sometimes.
Which would totally ruin the quiet vibe for me.
Not saying it can't or shouldn't be done, but seriously that shit sucks.

Re: How to DrO)))ne
We had a song with a 9 minute quiet part at the end, I think it was our best song but our singer refused to do the last part because of people talking. I still think it's bullshit. I know Low is special and gets special treatment but I've seen them play super quiet and crowds follow. My singer just didn't want to deal with the confrontation required to shut people up. It's especially frustrating seeing people do this at shows when they could easily be at the bar, out back or some other place enjoying their conversation and not bugging anyone.

I think checking your phone is worse than talking. Nothing gets me out of the zone more than realizing that whatever I'm doing isn't gnar enough for someone to just dig it and not check their fucking phone whilst the awesome is flowing into their ears.

I mean, I tell myself that's the gist of the conversation.
It is interesting, though--I came up going to metal and punk shows, and I really have no problem with people doing their thing when the music is, for lack of a better term, not serious. Some shows are meant to be parties. Some of the best shows I've played and been to have been like that. But it's can be a real blow to your artistic ego when you're doing "serious" music and people are fucking off.
