fuzz face and big muff derivative suggestions

Post by uyotg »

hey all, thinking of trying out these classics, but with a more modern twist. updated, more tweakability, cleaned up tone, etc., all of that. any suggestions for clones or derivatives?

for a fuzz face, all I could think of was the new Solidgoldfx If 6 Was 9. sounds awesome, but that's really the only one I know...

or the big muff, Blackout Blunderbuss for sure. the Hoof comes to mind, but I try to be diverse and EQD already has too much stake on my pedalboard :/ I also know Wren and Cuff has a ton, but they are supposedly true-to-the-original, so I guess I only have one idea for a BMP also.

anything else yours suggest? thanks!

^ This!

The Black Acid, Pharaoh, and Blunderbuss are my favorites of that bunch. Pharoah will give you punishing muff tones with loads of bass and mid cut but not as much gain as the Blunderbuss which is more aggressive and modern sounding but with a healthy dose of nasty. Black Acid sounds friggin huge, one of the best FF variants I've owned.

Original Fulltone '69, if you can track one down without losing an arm/leg.
EVERY former owner I've encountered expresses great regret, cursing themselves for parting with it.
The Slight Return is also an option...as are the mk II small box versions, but the originals are #1.

Analogman Sun Face, Sun Bender.

For Si versions, the MXR Classic 108 Fuzz is pretty good.

Muffs:
Basic Audio Tri/Ram.
Skreddy Mayo
Anything Stomp Under Foot
Arc Effects Big Green Pi

Edit: while they may not have increased "tweakability" or w/e, original big box muffs are very, very fun...and full of surprises!

thanks, you three. I actually have a Pharaoh--I never considered it a type of muff. it always seemed so transparent to me, while in my mind, muffs really take over your guitar's and amp's tone. I gave the Blunderbuss a shot a while ago at 18V, and it sounded more muffy to me, but also very sputtery and gated with the preamp up--I later read somewhere on this forum that it sounds a lot different at 18V vs. 9V, so I need to try it again.

all those FF variants are completely new to me. thanks a lot for the tips. I also just learned that the Fuzz Factory is based on the Fuzz Face. can't believe I never knew that.

I second the MXR 108 for a good ff clone. My guitarist has been recording with it and it just sounds so fierce. Yet very lush. That buffer comes in handy too.

I know you said that you have too much EQD already, but the Dirt Transmitter is based on a fuzz face, and every demo I hear of it sounds amazing.

I always feel weird about plugging my own pedals, but I make a FF-type pedal called the Germ Fuzz.

It's been tweaked for more clean-up availability and temperature stability. But you can find more info in the shark tank so I won't ramble on about it.

Let's not forget the good ol' Blackout Effectors Musket. I personally find it much more Muffy than the Blunderbuss.

Also, wasn't the Supercollider Muff- based? And the Fuzzrocious Grey 'Stache and Green 'Stache?

The Push+Pull Triton Sputnik Fuzz is pretty rad.
It's supposed to be a mix between a Fuzz Face and a Muff.
