BEADGC for guitar

Post by retinal orbita »

I'm thinking of re-stringing my guitar in 6 string bass tuning (BEADGC) as I play 6 string bass and 6 string guitar within my band, and I've come to really like all fourths tuning. I feel this would have several advantages for me:

Heavier tone?
Consistency between instruments
Moving out of the standard guitar range for "diversity of sound"
Saying "I play in all fourths tuning" makes me sound dapper, sophisticated and mysterious :excellent:

I guess what I don't know is can I just buy a set of 7 string guitar strings and use the first 6 of them, or will this wreak havoc on my guitar, setup, etc? I have very rarely played a 7 string guitar so I don't know how thick that b is going to be....

I know what you're thinking. Why doesn't this guy just go buy a 7 string guitar if he likes it so much? Well it's complicated, but I believe the simplest answer is my wife won't let me

It'll probably be a bit big for the nut, but otherwise, that should be totally fine.

yeah, none of those notes will put too much tension on the neck. If you were doing fifths tuning, then you'd have to be more careful

Thanks for the feedback. I went and bought a set of sevens on my way home from work, no problems so far. Seems great so far, haven't had a chance to test drive anything beyond a little pucking, but I like the thicker strings.....
