In my quest to shamelessly cop Eagle Twin tones, I slapped some really heavy strings on my 28" baritone today. Before, it was tuned in a lowered version of new standard: F, C, G, D, A, C.
NOW, it's tuned DADBF#A, instead of DAEBF#A so I can get those power chord sounds on the low strings. I'm not sure how well I like yet, though, because the strings are so fucking huge. From the low strings, they're .95, .85, .55, .32, .18, .14
Silly. If I decide to keep it this way, I'm going to have to change my amp up.
So this happened today (drop tuning weirdness)

Interesting. How's the tension? I have a CS Bass VI with 30" scale and it needed some SUPER beefy strings to go in D standard without feeling way sloppy on the low end. Most current set I'm using is 110-84-62-46-36-25 and it's perfect. I started at 95 on the low and it was beyond floppy.

Man, I probably need some heavier strings on my Bass VI, considering it would probably help with all the tremolo picking I do. I've got a set of .80-.20 on there right now, in E standard. HS, you do that La Bella jawn, no?

Re: So this happened today (drop tuning weirdness)
So I keep for forgetting to EQ the bass when I mix/export tracks, so if you listen to it on speakers with a sub-woofer or something, it's gonna be...um....extra bassy. I also decided to swap out the .85 string tuned to A for a .75 I had. It's way more playable that way. And I ditched the DAD part of the tuning in favor of just "new standard" style tuning. So low to high, it's : DAEBF#A. I think the intonation may need a little work, but otherwise it sounds fucking rad, I think. I had to run into a virtual amp on the computer because I ain't got not bass amp and I live in an apartment..... Dirt, in I-forget-what-order, is a mini for the dirty/crunchy tones, an OCD sometimes coupled with the the mini before it, and sometimes I was using a Black Plague (rat style distortion).
Edit: the tension is actually ok. The low D is a little bit floppy, but it's no worse than tuning to drop A with a .60 or something for the A.

Yeah, LaBella is the best source I've found. They have custom VI strings in both nickel plated and stainless rounds with tons of available gauges. Price is around $20-25 shipped and I usually have 'em in a week's time.theavondon wrote:Man, I probably need some heavier strings on my Bass VI, considering it would probably help with all the tremolo picking I do. That's the way to do it, man. Giant strings are king.
Giant strings make guitar necks feel playable to me.
