Finally got around to taking a photo. I just got both these guys recently and I dig them very much.

Yeah, I'm most likely going to go that route. I've read loads of reviews on those + some other GFS pickups that I was thinking about, and it seems like a lot of people think that they're great.

I had a NGD me ownself:

2006 (according to that internetz serial number decoder) Gibson SG Gothic Morte (US). I actually had it on layaway for a month and today was the day to bring her home. These don't have the thick satin finish that the Epi Gothics have. Neigh it is a thin Satin Ebony Nitro.

This guitar is something of a basket case.

Image

I picked it up for $300 plus the government from the Local GC :barf: .

As you can see it's pretty slutty. There is a headstock repair. Some dings and wear. Someone attempted to recess straplocks and when that likely proved inconvienent they put standard strap button is off centered places. This feels like it was likely some punk's touring guitar. I brought the guitar to a tech buddy of mine and he tugged on the headstock a few times and he said the repair was stable enough. He did mention putting some structural epoxy on the repair and sanding it down to blend it in.

The truss rod is free and works so that's good.

Digging around I discovered that these originally came with Open Coil pickups and Active electronics,...but popping open the hood reveals that the active electronics have been gutted and the pickups replaced with passives, which I prefer for guitar. The neck pickup is lovely. Nice and bassy,...hot like a like. The bridge pickup is week seeming and really thin sounding. I pretty much always play on the neck pickup so that probably isn't a big deal.

The nice thing about buying used from GC is that they have a good return policy. I'm not completely sold on the SG. They did have a black 98 Flattop Les Paul Special that I checked out and really liked. Weighed a ton. They wanted $450 for it,...so I may wind up taking the SG back and putting the credit towards the LP.

:idk:

warwick.hoy wrote:So playing the guitar more; it's fretting out on the bottom "E" string against the first fret. It's not a huge deal but I'm taking it back. Which is a shame cause it's an otherwise cool guitar. The LP Special has a hold on it until Aug 19th,...so new guitar day get's put off for a month. Or maybe they will push the fret back into place for me. I don't,...we shall see.

To clarify "not a huge deal". A fret out is a pretty big deal,...but I wasn't super pissed or anything. Just kinda disappointed. Still am cause that guitar could have been really cool.

Sucks man. That SG looks fucking EVIL.

Giving my Gold Top a little makeover today.

Recently I installed these (not my guitar):

Now I'm about to install these two items:

Within two weeks, I should also be installing these:

I was going to order a custom set of reverse zebra Black Winters, but it was almost double the price of the regular set. I'll modify 'em myself.

Got bored today on the day off, so I made a new pickup for my Jaguar.
It's a humbucker made out of two Strat single coils without the covers. I superglued the bases together, fabricated two new aluminum plates that screwed into the original screw post holes on the single coil pickups to hold the two pickups together for more support, and then finally laid beads of hot glue on both sides for more strength. On the aluminum bar I also drilled the new pickup mounting screw holes as well. The pickup sounds awesome. Zero noise at all, super clear punchy.

Set the guitar up with .11's, but I really want to go to .13's.

Secondly, I added some new string trees to the guitar. I took the original string tree out and threw it on my P Bass project yesterday, so I was really in need of something to break the string angle on the G + E strings. Cut them out of the same aluminum I used for the pickups, bent them and drilled them. I think the hardest part was figuring out the best break angle, but they're working perfectly.

That is awesome
Does the pickup have a bar magnet or is it the magnetized pole pieces still?

It's still the magnetized pole pieces! I think the only thing I might end up doing is wrapping the outside of the pickup in cloth but its not really necessary as the copper that is exposed is copper tape and not the actual windings
