DOD back from beyond the grave

Post by friendship »

Harman’s DigiTech today announced the rebirth of the DOD brand of effects pedals, beginning with reissues of the Overdrive Preamp 250 and Phasor 201. Both incorporate improvements like true-bypass wiring and an AC power jack.

Yeah, I went onto their website recently by accident and they had this cool, mysterious hype about a return so I signed up to their mailing list to be notified about the "big news". Got the email today.

Yawn.
So disappointed. Why couldn't they reissue something cool like the Meat Box?

FX series or GTFO. I don't get how there could possibly be a market for another generic overdrive...

Because they need to do business with the general public and the general public has pretty much no imagination whatsoever

Yet another 250 is indeed really ho-hum. I didn't think the 201 was in production, but it's just a slightly different Phase 45, so . . . meh-er.

Hopefully other pedals will be released in the future if this pair proves popular. It would be odd to relaunch the brand with the mere intention of briefly reissuing two pedals. The later DOD pedals are more adventurous but the size and styling of the 70s and 80s models would probably appeal to a lot more people. Maybe it would be cool if they could combine elements of the two.

GONKULATOR OR GTFO

But at least this opens up the possibility of other DOD reissues than these two.

I love how they describe changing the colour of the finish as an 'upgrade'.

If they rerelease that 680 delay and their 490 phasor I'll be all over that shit. Also their weird flanger from the same time period. Their oberdurrve and phase 45 derivatives are really pretty boring in my book.

DOD's not famous for that shit, they're famous for their weirdo's like the gonkulator and the meatbox. Why not rerelease/reinvision some of their amazing/noisy/grindy deathboxes and jump start a modern industrial movement?

Yawn.

I've owned one DoD pedal worth a spit, one of the 18v Performer series phasers. It was a pretty damn good genericish phase, but the 1/4" 18v supply in scared the bejesus out of me for years.

It also was $30.

I don't think it'd be reasonably worth $50 these days - but hey, peoples are stupid.

My pedalboard costs approximately 191 Metal Zones.

That stuff didn't sell when they released it. The Grunge and Death Metal pedals did. Under Harman's ownership they're even less likely to put out a niche product than a mass market one. Thankfully, we've got a wealth of interesting small-volume pedal companies now.
