Does Pike use one? He can actually crank his amps.

I've got a clone, it certainly sounds "fat", has an annoying fizz to the decay though.

I'm fairly certain he acquired the sonic Titan post sleep. I've seen it on his high on fire board for sure but I'm fairly certain that dopesmoker / Jerusalem is just the green head maxed out, maybe with that soldano preamp he used for a while.

I haven't played one but I plan on building one eventually as well as a few other DAM clones. As far as the clones I've heard that different transistors and other components can yield different results, like the fizzy decay mentioned above.

I think he kicked on a Distortion+ for the solos, but yeah, cranked Matamp all the way.

It's funny that everyone associates him with them really, everything else he's done has been with that hotrodded marshall sound, the AOR on Holy Mountain, the Soldano for High on Fire. He's even used that Kerry King amp, and Blackstars, which are in a similar vein.

Dave from DAM gave Matt the Sonic Titan last time Sleep toured the UK. Don't think he'd ever used one before then. Dopesmoker is cranked Matamp and a Distortion +. I played originals and clones and not a huge fan of the Titan for that kinda sounds but they're great for noise rock type stuff. Make the 4n7 off of pin 3 on the LM386 bigger for fatter/darker sounds if you're rolling your own.

Yea, that "fizz" is actually more likely the 386 amp chip. I think there are a few versions of the ST...the one I had was more mid'sy overdrive than stoner distortion.

I believe the Sonic Titan was created as an after-the-fact homage to Sleep.

I'd love one, but I've heard they're not so hot on bass, so...

Anyway, Matamps OrMats and VOTW Oranges are the bestest amps ever (non-negotiable my opinion is fact), but you don't really need one to replicate the Dopesmoker DUUUUUUUUUHN. Pike's not using Matamps with Sleep now, after all.
good deals are here.
