Modulation
Here we are at the epicenter of fuzz. Anyone know of a place equally valuable for say ring mods and bit crushers?
If not, I might kick myself in the ass to start making pedals and a website...

Re: Modulation
Doubtful...ring mods and bit crushers are a very specific market...but any effects forum will be full of modulation lovers, even ILF
My favorite ring mod right now is the fairfield circuitry - randy's revenge

As far as crushers...I've always had terrible gas for a geiger counter.
An ILF forumite is releasing a bit crusher module for L6 tonecore docks called the Red Panda...sounds pretty good.

Re: Modulation
I like to fancy myself the modulation guy here, although I bet there people here who know more than I do. For ring mods, I think the Moog, Frostwave and Lovetone units are the top of the line, but the Copilot, the Burford Robot, the Fairfield, and the Hax are all quite cool. The EHX is less useful, and the Gonkulator is probably the least versatile, but it can still do some wacky sounds.
For Bit Crushers, I think the absolute top of the line is the Frostwave Sonic Alienator, which is out of production, and I've been trying to get ahold of one for years now. The clips just sound fantastic. Then there's the Geiger Counter and the Bitrman are also very good. The Downgrade, Copilot Antenna and Catalinbread Heliotrope are all analog pedals that give you tones very close to bit crushing. And hopefully in a few days, jrmy will have a review for us on the Red Panda.

I hate waiting for shipping... I just keep staring at that little unit, thinking about how cool it's going to sound when I have something to plug it into.
As for ring mods, there are also a few fuzz/ring pedals out there... I believe the Crowther Prunes & Custard is supposed to be a pretty cool example of that. Also, there's a pedal built by a Providence RI company that I love... the company is B-Sharp music, and the pedal is called the Grim Rimmer. You can get some really sweet faux-octave-up robo-stortion sounds out of that. I need to do a demo of that one sometime.
Also, Bugbrand makes a bitcrusheresque pedal called the Bug Crusher that looks insane. And Malekko was SUPPOSEDLY developing a bitcrush / sample & hold pedal called the Holley Erectus... but after some badass audio samples of it appeared, it disappeared off the radar. Sad panda.

I might be looking to get rid of my Bugbrand Bug Crusher (it's the one knob version). I like it but hardly use it.jrmy wrote:Also, Bugbrand makes a bitcrusheresque pedal called the Bug Crusher that looks insane.

I wish there was such a place. So far though the ILF community has proven to be very knowledgeable and savvy!

Hmmmmm... well, if my Red Panda works out as I hope, I probably won't be in the market for a straight-up bitcrusher. Does the one-knob Bug Crusher do anything besides sample rate reduction? I've only seen the multi-knob version, so I don't know the difference...

It just does sample rate reduction, nothing else.

Re: Modulation
Turning the multiplier high on my goatkeeper or switching to ringmod mode on the whetstone(which just makes the rate knob on the phaser incredibly fast) also gives some fun ringmod tones.
Josh supposedly has a buncho pedals up his sleeve that will go into production soon...though it's doubtful the Holley Erectus will be part of that. If it is, Josh is a madman.

Re: Modulation
I LOVE MODULATION.
Randy's Revenge is one of the best ringmods I've ever heard. Cloudscapes made a cool ringmod called the "Turmoil."
Here's a big image of it.
He also made a bitcrusher called the "Samplerate Reducer"
Huge image is huge.

Also, morningstaru has it right with the Whetstone. Great ring-mode.

Re: Modulation
Randy's revenge is awesome but so pricey. I'd just go with a MF-102 since there's more you can do with it.
Bitcrushers though...that Red Panda. MMMM!
