I had a friend from Sheffield who was mad into this. I think she liked stuff like Oysterband and Rev Hammer. There was another band she really liked that did songs about Cider.

Re: Folk Punk?
you need to check out Chad Price's new album "Hello Sweet Face" on Suburban Home Records.
he's in DRAG THE RIVER and was in ALL.
great voice, very bare recordings, just vox/guitar
and a lot of the Suburban Home bands are hip to that acoustic country/folk stuff.
see The Revival Tour itinerary for another peek into that scene.

I really really do not like the stuff. It doesn't really do anything but make me upset that some guy is yelling in an attempt to sing. I do have respect for new prospects in music, however, from artist to artist I feel it gets a bit redundant. I'm playing with Defiance, Ohio Sunday and I'm not stoked on it at all.

Not really sure what these kinds of bands should sound like, but I've always kind of thought of The Evens as being sort of folk-punk type of stuff. Seeing them live is awesome too, but generally anything Ian MacKaye does is

If any of you are in Canada, head out to the East coast... Halifax, Nova Scotia in particular. Folk Punk is getting pretty popular there, in underground circles. Parts of Southern Ontario are feeling it too: Guelph, Kitchener and Brantford area.

Re: Folk Punk?
One of my favorite bands ever is Cordelia's Dad - they did acoustic & electric versions of old appalachian folk songs, as well as originals in a similar vein. Raw, messy, intensely beautiful stuff. Sadly, a lot of people didn't know what to make of them at the time. But they put out five great albums while they were together. They do have a few tunes with violins, but usually those are of the more raw variety, not the silky-smooth-pop-folk-strings sort.
I'm more like a mids-ist than a bassist.
