Wide-range opinions?

I'm curious. I've never owned a guitar with wide-range humbuckers on it, but I'm going to be putting together a project guitar kind of soon and I think I'd like to try some. Do they sound dark, bright, muddy.....and I think I've seen some non-Fender models on the internet somewhere. Do any of them differ greatly?

I've never owned a guitar with WRHBs either, but I've also been thinking about my next guitar having them. The modern Fender versions aren't really much like the originals at all, more like standard PAF style buckers under a fancy cover. Some of the boutique ones like Lollar and Novak are supposed to sound very close to the originals, albeit with different construction than the originals due to unavailability of the magnets used in the 70's.

Back in the day when I was in high school, my school had a 70's Tele Deluxe (this was in the 90's when 70's Fenders were still considered worthless junk by most) and I thought it sounded FANTASTIC.

In the neck position in drop A# there was very little note definition for chords and stuff, but the leads sounded fantastic. Unfortunately that guitar had a tele pickup in the bridge so I can't comment there.

But I have been wanting to build a maple fretboarded black on black jazzmaster with a single WRHB in the bridge and a single volume control.....
