Pedals using large inductor coils/transformers?

Post by rustywire »

In revisiting my Telenordia TF-1, which I nearly sold like a dumbass... (but luckily a deal never materialized when it was listed in B/S/T) I remembered how finicky it can be.
Here's what it looks like on the inside:

It's very sensitive to EMI and picks up hum from other transformers within close proximity.
But when it finds a spot it likes...whew, everything sounds so..........musical  with the response of plugging direct into an amp.

I'm making this thread to list/discuss any pedal (particularly non-tube) varieties that employ such a design.
What have you fellow fuzzheads found in your travels? :hobbes:

A lot of ring mods have transformers.

Anything that plugs directly into the wall, obviously.

The zvex Lofi loop junky has one too.
Got my A machines on the table, got my B machines in a drawer.

Ring mods and octave fuzzes of the Octavia sort.

Wahs, vari-tones, and other eq-ish things. Inductors are useful for low-pass, high-pass, and band-pass filtering. The normal eq applications a little search engine will find you. The best explanation of how wahs work is the geofex.com "The Technology of Wah Pedals" article: http://www.geofex.com/article_folders/w ... wahped.htm

It depends on if the transformer is being used for impedance conversion or electrical isolation or power conversion ect ect as to what kind of noise it will exhibit.

that is pretty cool,
I don't know if any of my pedals have transformers like this but I will check

whoever lined up the core on that thing did a pretty sad job of it,
nobody else may care about this but can you see what the brand is on the transformer?
