Screaming Panda

Post by pillof »

Ok, this is my first time making a thread to review a pedal. Most of the time I just reply in other people's threads.

I just got screaming panda by Matt @ stompunderfoot a week or so and I'm bonding with this pedal!

From what I know this is a tweaked and improved version of Dimarzio's Very Metal pedal from 80s'

I haven't played or seen a Very Metal in my life though, so I can't compare it with Screaming Panda.

Screaming Panda can go really high gain and fuzzy, but always retains the biting attack and clarity. It's like a tight Rat without the fizzness, and the whole gain range on screaming panda is all usable.

The thing I love most is the tone knob on screaming panda. It shifts the mid emphasis, making subtle but improtant changes that affects the playing style. It covers the Voxy nasal fuzzy overdrive (wire) to the High Mid focesd bright Marshall distortion (ie: Ramones, Dino Jr.), to Smashing Pumpkins super overdriven fuzz when crancked. The low end stays there all the time so it never goes wimpy. It's noise ratio is also amazingly low comparing to how high gain it sounds.

I'm now stacking my white spider into it all the time. It tames the shrills without taking away the presence. I'm using some WS settings I've never used before, like cranking the volume of TP side, texture 9 o'clock, and 05 crancked.

Also thanks to NewarkWilder for the great deal! :thumb: All the pedals I've got from you are staying on my pedalboard

Sounds cool, I know J Mascis owns one, not sure what songs he uses it on live. :idk:

I'm not sure whether he uses it or not though, but I'm sure screaming panda pairing up with a "distortron engine pedal" can cover a lot of the sounds in Farm, at least rhythm part.

I would love a picture of his pedal board with the Screaming Panda on it.
I place, solder and wire every part.
By hand. By me.
