Might as well ID for PNP's, too. I got three varieties of NPN from Tayda, all in fair quantity, and all tested 340-380. I was looking for a lot lower for some fuzzes, especially from the 2N3904's specified.
So what are you using to hit what ranges?

it varies with different manufacturers for the same part number. it also varies from batch to batch and from one transistor to any other transistor in the same batch. I have accumulated cheap silicon transistors of many different part numbers over the years. I might buy a batch of identical fairchild 3904 from tayda and mouser just to see what the gain difference is between batches or factories within a company. I have silicon NPN transistors Hfe 90 to Hfe 5000 with everything in between.

2SC828R`s are great for Superfuzz, usually coming in around 150 to 250. 2N2222 is another fav, actually the PN2222 version is better I find, since no metal can to attract noise. Usually come in at 100 to 200.
I know you`re asking for NPN, but if you`re building PNP, you might want to look at the 2N2904A. The usually come in at 70 to 85, and sound phenominal. I`ve used it in a Rangemaster circuit with very good results. For a silicon Fuzz Face, try a 2N2905A in the Q2 spot. Another beauty.
Another NPN series that I favor is the BC546/7/8, which can range between 90 and 270.
2N4401 is another good one, but usually yeilds higher gains. As eatyourguitar stipulates, the only real option is to buy a batch and sift through them. In a bag of 100, the gains will be all over the map. You just have to be patient, measure them, and then audition them on the breadboard to find that «right» one.
