My first clone. some questions?

Howdy.

I love my demo tape fuzz so much I built another one . Now, I've never traced a pedal (or built one). So,
Here is my question, my clone sounds pretty close, but it doesn't have the same treble cut as the original.
Now, I did mess up a little when ordering parts. I meant to order a 4.7 nF film capacitor, instead I ordered a radial mallory 150 capacitor. Same value, 4.7 nF. Now, I mean would this account for the treble not cutting as nicely on my clone? I figured same value, should be the same, right?
Or, is it because I have this thing on a bread board, with clips holding everything together?

I mean, its so close, I made a little side by side movie, is this close enough, or, did I miss something tracing the original????


Also,
I ordered Alpha Single-Gang 16mm, LinearTaper, 11 Detents potentiometers from small bear. Now these pots are not smooth, they click in place each little notch up. Does that make sense? I want a smooth sweep of the pot, not click click click. It jumps too much.
What type of pot do I have, and what should I order in the future?


Any help would be cool.

Sounds to me you got it right.

Every component has some tolerance resistors typ 1 - 5% caps typ 10-20% and pots typ +/-10% too! Even production pedals will have variation between them.

Depends on the design and it's complexity too.

Don't worry too much about the "type" of a capacitor, if there's any audible difference it's probablyjust the tolerance. (Different types of caps will have different tolerances with some over +/-20%).

That's pretty close dude. Go to mouser and order several diffrent kinds of that cap value and swap them. There's tolerance and different caps just sound different.when I build stuff sometimes I think particular caps make a difference by my ear but then there's the tolerance thang. Mouser has shitloads if caps. Shitloads. I love mouser.

But the pots, how do i know a smooth pot from a "notched" one, when i order?

Don't buy pots with detents if you don't want pots with detents, lol. Those 11 little spots where it settles are detents.

11 detents pot means there are 11 'notches' any pot that doesn't mention detents is going to be smooth
