i think i was gonna buy "Milk Man" but never got around to it and i did see them live circa "Runners Four" but i know AFTER that was when i actively stopped paying attention. they were at their best when they were the most quirky. but i would never say they are a bad band though.

Really like them. They (did) bring a realness to their music kinda like Yo La Tengo does in the same abstract way.

I saw them in Philly a couple years ago because they were opening for another band. I had never heard of them before. It was honestly one of the worst "musical" performances I've ever seen, and I do live sound for a living for all levels of musicians. A friend of mine was at the show and actually came to see them, and he left half way through their set. He told me later that he stopped listening to them after that; he was that put off by the show. I've never listened to their recorded material so I can't comment on that. I think they must have just been really, really, REALLY wasted at the show I saw. I couldn't even tell you what genre they were going for but I assume they are sort of a noise/punk thing?

I've literally been sitting at an open mic doing sound for a teenager who was strumming chords on the guitar and stopping mid song, and saying, "oh no uh.. wait that's not it oh, yeah... uh no wait," and thought to myself, "at least it's not Deerhoof."

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that it was just a really bad show for them, but man... they played like it was the first time they had seen their instruments.

Saw them open for Bloc Party a while ago. They're much better live IMO.

Yeah unfortunately I often deal with people coming in with an attitude towards me just because I'm the sound person and apparently some other sound person gave them shit at the last show. I usually just take the kill em' with kindness approach to these people and it works well about 90% of the time. To be honest though, I have never heard of sound people (I guess specifically sound men) being generally regarded as sexist. I kind of know what you mean about teenagers because a lot of engineers loose patience with musicians who obviously lack stage experience, and teens often fit this description (of course you have to start somewhere ).

I personally have a lot experience doing sound AND performing, and I think being on both sides of the coin has given me a good leg up on how to interact well with who ever I'm working with.

Anyway, it seems like maybe you meant to imply that maybe I am a "snobbish asshole" because I'm a sound person, and I bashed a Deerhoof show that I saw. If I am in fact a "snobbish asshole" (I'm pretty sure I'm not ) it has nothing to do with my job or how badly they played that night. Maybe I was pretty scathing in my review but I did make sure to emphasize that show was my only encounter with band or their music and for all I know it was one bad night.

To the OP and any other Deerhoof fans, please know I in no way meant to imply that there is something wrong with liking/loving Deerhoof. Maybe if I listened to one of their records or saw a better show I would like them. Hey maybe the sound guy mixed their monitors really badly that night because there's a woman in the band

Okay, so I just listened to some clips on iTunes and I have to say, I don't know if I would become a fan, but they are pretty cool. The singers voice is probably my least favorite part of the band, but it is much better than what she did when I saw them live. She was screaming really hard and singing very fast at the show I saw (not that that's a bad way to sing but it didn't sound good in this case). Does that make sense to anyone? Were they maybe touring an album that isn't on iTunes or something. I can't find any vocals on their albums that are same stylistically as what she was doing at the show I saw. I actually contemplated for a moment that maybe I confused them with another band but I'm sure it was them. I saw them around '04 or 05' I think.
