I tried one on guitar, very nasty but not the kind of nasty I'd get much use from, most settings where overly bright to me, however the settings that worked sounded really great though, it's a mean octave fuzz.
good deals with: the_brow, phantasmagorovich, alexsga, DarkAxel, goroth, The Wood Wizard, Tendollarcat, vbps, monkeydancer, intothegroove, Brobee

I have one, and have used it on bass. It does get very nasally quickly on the dial. You can tune in some bass-friendly sounds, but it's a narrow band. Also, the envelope/sweep seems to get overwhelmed by the bass signal very easily, so you don't get a whole lot of that, though I think you can stimulate it with judicious volume knob rolloffs. Interestingly, you can get a great fat overdrive sound out of the Chaos by dialing in only a tiny bit of the entropy/chaos controls - I've probably used it for that way more than for the other stuff!
I'm more like a mids-ist than a bassist.

I think a lot of them are kinda octavy, I'm sure the Chaos was anyway.

Yeah. I had the helium for a while. It's a very traditional sounding octave distortion. It was alright, but I sold it because it didn't have enough gain on tap. From what I've heard online, the Chaos has more of a ring mod sound in addition to the octaves

Re: Wolftone Chaos
I have had an original one for 6 or 7 years and love it for guitar, never tried it on bass. Great ring moddish octave sounds, filtery sweeps, very responsive to volume and tone knob tweeks, and like jrmy said, a great overdrive sound with the entropy and gain turned down. I had a Malekko reissiue for a while and it was similar but much brighter, kind of harsh, and didn't sound as good at lower gain. The original is eq'd just perfectly for me. My only issues with the original are the reverse polarity power requirement, the size and backwards jacks. I was really hoping the reissue would sound the same in a more pedalboard friendly package but no luck so off it went.
