How do you afford your GAS?

I try to buy wisely and I often buy broken stuff and fix it. TZhe last thing I paid full asking price for was my simms watts. the dude knew he had me hooked bad after I tried it out. All the other amps I got dirt cheap in non working or not fully working condition. Pedals and such I try to sell as I buy so its not as bad.

I think once you get to a certain point gear wise it becomes easier to get that next cool thing because you dont need something else anymore and can sell it. I've also reached the point where I dont need to buy anything crappy because I probably allready have something better that will do the job. Really cuts down on impulse buys when a new thing would be worse than what you allready have.

It's pretty easy to list, and you can find the exact version you're selling. And a fixed price means no auctions. However people are really insane with prices so if you want to move records at a fair price it's not hard....

Good feedback tools, easy to list items, the only downside is you're stuck with their stock image rather than taking your own pics. So it's buyer beware and some people don't know what the fuck they're talking about when they grade records. I got one last year and it was like it had been stored in an ant colony for a thousand years... VG+? Get fucking real.....

how do you do the payments on discog? paypal?
not having to do pictures would be a bonus as a seller, the 2 things putting off relisting at the moment are having to do all the photos and having to post all those bloody pizzabox mailers.
yeah, record grading .... it always pissed me off being so scrupulous in describing everything tiny scratch as a seller, but not getting the same when buying from all those blind ant farmers.

The way I buy gear has shifted in the last few months. My wife and I have been on a get-out-of-debt plan for about 5 years. We finished in July. We paid off a car and replaced it with a new one, paid off three credit cards, Home Depot, Lowes, Best Buy x2, and student loans. We now have no debt beyond our house payment, and that payment is ridiculously low.

Before we were out of debt, I funded gear exclusively with birthday and Christmas gifts. We spent virtually no money on ourselves. We never went out to eat, and we haven't been on vacation since 2007. If anyone asked me what I wanted, the answer was always "Visa gift card." My birthday is at the end of October, and Christmas is just six weeks later, so I would find myself with $300 - $500 in gift cards every January. When you buy used items, clearance items, and negotiate like you are about to spend you last dollar, you can get a good deal.

Now that we're out of debt, we have a lot more money each month. Every time we paid something off, we kept our lifestyle the same, and dumped the extra cash towards the next debt. Add up everything we paid off, and we were making a $1xxx+ in payments each month, and that goes straight to our savings now. That buys a lot of gear.

Of course, we are having trouble getting out of our frugal ways. Married over a year, still no honeymoon. Didn't go out to eat to celebrate our anniversary, or that we're out of debt. We just don't spend money. I did break the mold in the last two weeks, though, spending $450 on a compound miter saw, a router, and a router table. In exchange, my wife got a new tablet.

Heh.

Picked up a DeWalt DW715 12" single-bevel compound miter saw. All the other brands I was able to try didn't seem to lock in to the miter stops very well. Since I have a ton of trim work to do, and plan on building new cabinet doors (31 doors, 14 drawer fronts), I needed accuracy.

Also grabbed one of these and one of these to get started. I went with Craftsman because I figured repair parts would be available well into the future.

I scored big the other day. I drove down the alley behind my house to drop some 2x4s in my back yard, and spotted what looked like a toolbox in a big pile of trash. I walked back down to see if it was something I could use, and it turns out it wasn't a toolbox. It was one of these. A $369 surface planer. It was a bit dirty, but in perfect shape. I flipped the blades around to the other (prefect) side, and now I have a surface planer. Good thing, too-- my house has 3 different thicknesses of flat trim around every door and window, and now I can duplicate it exactly.
