Actually the Low E on a bass is about 41hz so 36hz would be slightly (imperceptibly) lower than Drop D on a bass.

Yup. In an old thread I had about super low tunings, Ancient Asatronaught posted something about hearing that Gentry tunes to "some kind of D-tuning." It can't just be drop-D in the bass register, because of all the highs he still manages to get, but there are a handful of odd-ish tunings that, when lowered, might work....

Anyways, how about them Hex Geetarz?! I'm gonna have to sell some shit this year so I can get one....

It could be something like an all-fifths tuning. The guy from Lightning Bolt does something similar and he has banjo strings on top.

Oh, okay. I thought an open A was 440 but I guess it's lower than that. So he's not much lower than a Fender VI.

I tune in fifths with a 27.5" baritone and a 25.5" Tele.
It sounds unbelievably heavy with fuzz.

With 13-70 strings I tune, low to high:
A-E-B-F#-C#-G#

Fifths is also how I tune my baritone, though I do it Fripp-style, with the highest string being a third instead of a fifth. I start from a low F; FCGDAC. I would consider trying to start from a low D, but I don't think my amp setup would work for it right now :erm:

I play this guitar far more often than the more "regular" tuned ones.

(also, after playing a LOT in 5ths style tuning....it doesn't look like he's tuned that way.....)

I had this thing called the Cello Blaster (Schecter CB2000). It had 5-strings and was tuned in 5ths down to A. It's my own fault but I felt compelled to play power chord like Tool riffs constantly and I've been anti dropped-D ever since.

knowing Gentry he probably tunes to some mathematical equation based on the angles in the pyramids. Which is why it sounds so awesome.

(I actually know a band that did this).

That sounds fuckin' tight.
I need to tune one of my basses to fifths.

Hm. Drop D (on a bass) on guitar. Tight.
