The Horror's Three Decades...

Post by Radiohead625 »

What the hell is going on in this song? The effects are some of the craziest I've ever heard. Anyone know how he's doing it? It sounds like a twisted carnival!!!

Josh Hayward is big on building his own effects... properly weird ones too (apparently he's a physics genius or something) - also, I think during this album, he was heavily into using a HOG.

I'm a fan of The Horrors but I always get the impression that people exaggerate the guitar guy's FX wizardry. I expect that most of his own devices are fuzz pedals and the digital effects come from the familiar sources (I doubt he creates his own reverse reverb algorithms for instance).

Yeah, I hear fuzz, reverse reverb or delay or an auto swell and octaving of some kind.

I could create something similar with a combination of m5/POG/Hardwire Reverb/fuzz/Bigsby I think.

Definitely some great sounds on that album.

When you pause the video at 1:40 it just looks like a hog and a bunch of boss pedals.

He probably only does his own fuzz pedals, but either way he has some amazing sounds. What's a good reverse reverb for cheap?

It's been speculated in the past that he's used a Digiverb, which is even cheaper. It sounds like he might use old Yamaha and/or Alesis rack effects though. Yamaha FX 500 units are usually pretty cheap.

Here's a pretty clear shot of his pedalboard:

Alesis Microverb III has a pretty nifty reverse reverb, to be picked up for cheap too
