True bypass tube screamer options <$200

Post by louderthangod »

I'd be all over the 808 HW but I can't seem to find them for less than $280. Unlike the gear page crowd, I like the mid-hump of a tube screamer as well as the slight bass rolloff...it just makes everything about the guitar through a tube amp sound better. Nothing too high gain or trying to reinvent the wheel, just a good, 808 sounding pedal that is true bypass (buffered might be okay but I've got buffers on my board and I don't want to add another variable). There are a million tube screamer variants but why am I'm struggling coming up with options? What am I missing?

It isn't true bypass and that makes significantly less difference than guitar players have been led to believe.

Hardwire CM-2, $100 new and $50-70 used. It sounds killer.

many say they don't want the mid hump, but it's there for a reason. lots of overdriven bass in to a loud guitar amp is going to sound... well pretty bad.
these kind of pedals sound bad at low volumes though. Almost all overdrives have some kind of frequency tweaking.

Just get one of the cheap Japanese clones? Mooer, Joyo, anything like that... it's a true bypass tube screamer for $50, can't complain.

The Mooer even has a 'hot' mode which I assume is just an extra gain switch.

Way Huge Green Rhino.

The Earthquaker Devices Talons knocked mine off my board in 30 seconds flat though - not necessarily Tubescreamery, but so flexible that I'd bet you could dial in those sounds if you wanted.

I have had issue with buffered bypass in front of fuzzes before and like I mentioned, I don't want to add too many variables into the equation. It's enough of an obstacle if I like the sound of the pedal, I don't need to add the complication of it not working well with my other, less likely to be changed pedals.

More expensive options:

Fulltone Full-Drive 2 mosfet

Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive - the newish 'MOD' edition with a fifth, mode switch

Neither of those any good?

And loads of cheap Far Eastern made stuff.

The Liquid Sunshine is about as close to a TS as their Starlight DLX is ;)
JFET, a couple of gain stages, pretty unique control set. RAD pedal!

Way Huge Green Rhino is pretty much a TS. edit - sorry Jrmy's already said that.

Mojohand Rook might do it - haven't seen a schematic but the description makes it sound TS based (but with a bax)

Have you looked at a TImmy? That doesn't really have a lot to do with a TS but is true bypass, is pretty cheap, and will get some similar tones.

Or buy a wee TB loop for a couple bucks and put whatever TS you want in the loop.
