Fender Blender and Ampeg Scrambler clones

Post by ooop »

Whatchoo know about them? Any to be recommended? There was another thread about this but it didn't really go anywhere and was from several years ago and I hesitate to engage in necromancy.

I built a Scrambler on vero, and it sounds great. I used the Andrew Carrell layout, with the original spec transistors and diodes.

I recently had the pleasure of trying Mark Hammers Scrambler, with a Distortion + front end. Now THAT was wild. The note blooms were just un-effin'-believable.

Fender Blender is just an unruly beast. I like it as well, but I prefer the Scrambler.

Ronsound had a Fender Blender clone tht fixed the massive volume drop and added led indicators and put the jacks the right way and basically made it how it shouldve been when they reissued it.

The BAT Fnord is like a frankensteined Scrambler + Octaver Fuzz. Totes badass!

I had a Fnord, I liked it, excellent pedal, but the octave was a bit subtle compared to the Blender.

Yeah, it's def not the same, like a toned down version with a mix but pretty unique sounding.

For bass my vote is on the Ampeg Scrambler only because I've never tried the Fender Blender. And the Scrambler was originally an effect in an Ampeg bass amp so it must of been designed for bass in the first place. :idk:
I recently built a 4 knob Scrambler clone that sounds great on bass. The 4th knob is to vary the amount of octave in the signal. I didn't bother with vintage spec transistors so I don't know if it makes a big difference.

I have been meaning to breadboard a Fender Blender and fuck with it but haven't gotten to it. Did a layout a few years ago and etched a board but never boxed it. But since then it's always been of great interest as I remember it sounding like a massive beast. Different than the superfuzz variants, Foxx tone machine, and the Scrambler. It's own nasty thing. Always wondered why there's not a builder that puts a sicker version of this one out.

have built both according to the vero layouts at gfx. used silicon 1n4148 in the scrambler and germanium 1n270 in the blender. blender is way better. bigger. rawer, blistering. scrambler is tighter and scratchier by comparison. though obviously in comparison with a blender a lot of things are.

decided the scrambler will have to undergo tweaking if it is to be worthy of boxing for my guitar board. though may save it for when i get another bass. they are supposed to be huge for bass. maybe better than for guitar.

the blender was straight in to a box as soon as i heard it.

here's my blender pre boxing if you want to see what they look like naked...
