Amp to cab question.

Post by charmander »

Hi guys, I have a 65 Alamo Paragon bass head, which is awesome but it's acting a little funny. It really should go into a tech but I don't have the funds right now for that, and my father in law is an electrical engineer so I just thought y'all might know where I should start with this.

So the issue is this: I have a 1x15 cab and a 1x12, both are 8 ohm (the impedance the amp is rated for). If I plug into the 12 everything works as it should, and if I plug the 15 into the extension jack everything works. However, if I plug into JUST the 15 the sound is almost inaudible, even with the amp volume on 10. Any ideas why that would be? I have a crate v50 also that plays great through both cabinets so the cabs are definitely good.

Thanks for any help.

Not sure what's up with the 1x15 cab volume loss, that's strange indeed. One thing to note though: In the future, when running both 8 ohm cabs simultaneously, you need to set the amps's output to 4 ohms or use dual 4 ohm outs to avoid a mismatch.

Right, I would but supposedly (as accurate as info on 50 year old amps is) these paragons are designed to have 8 at both outputs, something in the circuit that I don't understand. :idk:

When only using one cab, make sure that you're plugging into the same jack that the 12 was plugged into.
I had an amp that had two jacks, but you had to plug into the left one first, or the right one wouldn't work.
That could be what's happening here.

I wish it was that, fortunately the amp sounds badass anyway. I want to get a bigger cab to run with the 15 so I hope I can figure this out because who knows if the Alamo would like a 4x12 or something.
