Help me design my Dunwich amplifier

I know this is a Dunwich, but it's my Dunwich. I've waited a hella long time for this opportunity. It's going to be everything I want it to be. I don't want to break boundaries for the sake of it or to blow someone else's trumpet.

This is the exact mindset you should have going into this thing. You've been waiting FOREVER to get this amp going, I'm sure you know pretty much what you're after by now. Dunwich gets mentioned and pics of wizards and pot leaves get posted haha, I get that but it's cool to see you goin with a versatile low watter, the circuit description sounds killer!

I think Carr makes some sexy little combos, a good source of inspiration for the look of your amp. I especially like your wave-like grill cloth design, should turn out super cool. The Carr guys are a nice bunch, I bet if you emailed they could tell you where to source the tolex or cloth. That brown Carr grill is really unique, haven't seen anything exactly like it elsewhere. It looks even better in person too.

As for tolex, black pebbled or dark wine red would be cool. Piping looks nice imo, I'd go for it. A stained finish would look slick too but may take a beating if its gonna be in constant transit.

Funnily enough, most of the Doom fans I know of, and my friends here, rarely ever talk about smoking. Again, maybe you're just having a laugh and I'm completely off the mark here, but smoking should only ever ADD to music, not be the defining factor. There is a stupid negative connotation I wish wasn't there. It's the same with Hip-Hop. Not every rapper doobies it up before each rap.

Do you think I should go black or red pebbled with the tolex? It's the same stuff Hiwatt/Vox amps use, I think. I'm tempted by a stain, but I'm not sure. I don't think the cab builder can do stains. TJ won't be able to do this one because he's moving out. I imagine Nick will be subcontracting The Cab Guy for the work.

if you want a stained cab I will have Tom do it from Mammoth Cabs. My recommendation is not to do stained cabs if you worried about it getting hit often during transit.

Yeah, Shannon suggested against stained because of that. I had it in my head stain was stronger than tolex. I'm happy with tolex. It was my original plan anyway. I dig them both equally. Do you mind emailing me contact details of Adam? Would he mind me talking to him regarding the cabinet design?

Beat up stained cab does look fucking awesome, I must admit. I think I actually prefer it than clean and pristine.

I think tolex will look better for this style low wattage combo, keep it really classy looking. I'd be going brown/reddy brown/ox blood tolex and something along that golden Carr style grill cloth.

You know, I had that Carr Slant 6V head and matching 2x12 years ago and I struggled with that same decision. I ended up with the red wine and brown cloth but they didn't offer it pebbled. It looked really cool but I eventually saw a 1x12 6V combo with stock black pebbled in a local store and I honestly think it looked even better, esp paired with that cloth.

Oh, as for that control panel, I'd def make it top or rear mounted like you're planning. I'd prefer top but agree it's probably not be worth increasing overall size just for that one feature, depends how much tweaking you think you'll be doing with it, may be a pain. Either way, you need to keep the front free of controls, gonna look so much cooler that way, like an oddball old school amp aesthetic going on. I love small combos with that look. Just saw a Carr Impala recently that summed up that cool oddball look.

Dan is sort of in a catch 22 on this design since he has some conflicting design constraints or ideas. Basically making it small as possible but with enough controls for flexibility leads to the reverse mounted chassis idea. I can do top mounted but I need to expand the size of the chassis and the cabinet to accommodate the mounting which makes everything bigger and some what heavier. It has 7 controls I believe at this moment and for size reduction I even dumped the Standby switch (not needed either way) so that I could squeeze it down in terms of size. There are limitations in terms of how small you can make it with full size PEC pots and a completely turret design.

Some of the old Supro's and such look amazing too, more like its a piece of high end furnature than an amp. I love the really old 30's and earlier designs, especially where the grill opening is cut out in an inteseting shape.
