hao rust booster is my mids compensation for the bluebeard. so I have the option of either scooped, mids, or all of it depending on what's turned on. switching off the beard's tonestack makes for super heavy. the supercollider was too mushy for me. slow attack.

Pretty much this. Though, a big muff having a mids knob has never really helped with cutting through the mix for me.

Basically, you're supposed to lay waste to everything when you step on that switch. Turn up that volume knob. Believe in yourself. And an overdrive in front does help shittons, but if you really want that Sledge bass tone, just crank it man. A Black Russian is actually the closest I've ever come to that sound too.

You can compensate by being louder but you still really just get the low end mostly, which can lack definition depending on what style of music you play. I like using an overdrive or boost either in front or behind a muff to help out with that. Or look for a muff variant with more mid boost or control over the mids. You can also bypass the tone stack for added mids and volume. I'm using two muff variants on my bass board right now and they both sound really good in the mix. A TAFM with a Rat Tail in front of it to one amp, and a Bluebeard with the tone bypassed to the other amp. Mids moderately accented through the amps EQ's.
99.999% sure the TAFM isn't muff based.

But yes, tone bypass is good for da mids.

I think, for me, this's pretty much the key.
Yup.

"The bassist in my band at the time (Bon Savants) was using a splitter pedal and (I believe) Russian Big Muff for his main sound and wanted to simplify his rig. I told him I would undertake the task, but didn't want to necessarily clone the stuff he already had as I was more interested in creating something new. There was a little back and forth after I initially started working on it, but for the most part he trusted me and if I'm not mistaken, after all of these years he's still using the same pedal."

Good point and the Ampeg fridges those guys all use must be a factor in how pedals respond sound wise too I guess.
Yeah this is probably part of it. My amp is a marshall plexi clone set to be pretty dirty most of the time, and the muff sings right through the band mix. You could probably get a similar effect by stacking with another amp-like dirt pedal.

I get the impression that ILF seems to be anti-TS.
Cutting through a live mix is exactly what it's for.
Tubescreamer style OD set to boost upper mids w/touch of gain, volume dimed > stacked into any scooped muff =

It's true, TS's are quite useful. I just hate their sound. Some derivatives I find more tolerable, but that's largely because they fix the bandwidth issues. (MXR Badass OD is one I got as a gift that I find surprisingly nice sometimes.) Rat isn't the same over the top mid lump effect but can do some of the same work of pushing some mids.
