What do you guys think about Music Man basses?

Post by ChetMagongalo »

I don't see a lot of MM talk around here. I recently got a Musicman Sterling bass and it's pretty cool, but I feel like in a mix it kinda sucks. it just like sits in a weird spot. I think it sounds decent on it's own. I used to really like the sound but after owning one I'm not really impressed

I like hem in Nine Inch Nails but I think the weird spot it sits in a mix works for it.

First bass tone I was able to recognize just from hearing a recording. Love the thing. Why do you ask?

I wanted a 5-string HH Stingray for the longest time, but once I actually got the chance to play one along with a G&L L-2500, I bought the G&L. The Stingray definitely has a signature sound, but I felt like the L-2500 was closer to what I wanted. For two HH basses, I was amazed by how different they sounded. I wonder if it has to do with the pickup positions. The HH is shifted more towards the neck, and the G&L is closer to the bridge.

Anyways, between the L-2500 and the Ric, I pretty much have all the bass tones I want, so the Stingray GAS is basically gone. :idk:

I like them and have project frankenstein kicking around, it's going to be for slap and RW pick tonez, but as my main bass no... I would need a bass with a pickup more towards the neck, for me Ps and Rics just work best:idk:

I have a Sting Ray 5 HH amd I freaking love it. So many sounds coming out of that thing, while still sounding unique.
Also, the most comfortable 5 string neck I have felt so far.

I owned a MM until it was stolen out of my car :( it played great, felt great and sounded like what one would call "the sex".

Had a 70s Stingray for a couple of months. It was a good player, but that tone really didn't lend itself to the variety of things I was playing at the time. If you want THAT sound, it's the way to go. If you want nearly anything else, you can find something that uses an MM pickup to approximate that sound as well as get you a lot more variety.

I love Musicman. I'd buy one in a heart beat. Have never played one I didn't love. Sell the Sterling and get a Stingray or Reflex. Do it. DO IT.
