Bassists...I need more opinions...EMPEROR

Post by UncleBBQ »

So I may be the proud new owner of an Emperor 8x10 in the coming month or so...I am currently using a YBA300 head but I am not sure if I am interested in using that with this cab.
I previously asked for opinions for more PAAAAAAAAAAWR (power)...today I would like to know, what I should keep my eyes out for to pair with this cab.
:!!!: :omg:

I can't be of much help with the bass cab knowledge but I have a fleet of Emperor guitar cabs and they rule so fucking hard! Congrats on the 8x10, gonna be a beast both sonically and physically speaking. I'd go looking for some 15's next. :thumb:

Certainly nothing wrong with the amps that were already mentioned. I remember demoing those Sunn 1200s amps in music shops and loving the sounds but the price was out of budget. They were Fender era Sunns IIRC.

I've never played through an Emporer but the obvious choices are an SVT-CL or SVT-VR or a Mesa Boogie 400 or 400+. The Mesas are a little more lively sounding than the SVTs IMO. I love my SVT-CL though.

Perhaps if you want more powertube compression without blowing out your earholes,....some version of the Ampeg V4.

If you wanna blow your wad (do you have a budget?),...Meatsmoke.

What's that cab rated at?

I have thought about an SVT-CL, I mean I currently do have my Traynor head which will work until I recover from my spending on the cab.
It's rated at 8 ohms.

I hate my Traynor head lol, YBA300 was a huge let down for me...love the tone, but so unreliable.

If its an 8ohm cab; I'd go for a Mesa 400 or 400+

SVT-CLs won't do 8ohms (4ohms or 2ohms only) You might cook it. Can't speak to the SVT-VR or vintage SVTs. I think the V4s might be rated at 8ohms.

Or you can just get a 2nd 8ohm 8x10.

V4's do 2-4-8.

What about a Peavey Festival Series head? Those are awesome.
I agree with a Mesa 400 or 400+

SVT through an 810 is the staple for a reason. I used a SVT-CL for years, and have also had a Mesa 400, GK 800 RB, Sunn Concert Bass, Ampeg V4s, an SWR, and probably one or two others I can't remember now

The SVT is gone...my bass duties are much lighter nowadays, and I found I much preferred the warmth and fuzz from an overdriven V4, and if I need more, I biamp with my Sunn and another cab
The Mesa was a bit hi-fi sounding for me, with more midrange emphasis than I like (hmmmm, sort of like one of their guitar amps...) and not enough lowend compared to the SVT. Technically I never owned this and so I really only spent a few weeks with it, enough time to find I much preferred the SVT...also, the thought of anything with 12 power tubes makes my wallet shudder.
The GK's are awesome amps, with very reasonable prices, solid clean tones and reliable. Very easy to dial in a good sound...you know what you're getting.
Concert Bass is great but I probably wouldn't use it alone for loud gigging unless I had it matched to the perfect cab to bring the thunder, and my guess is these now cost quite a but more than they should.
The SWR was long ago, one of the redface Bass 350s, and was pretty cool if I remember. At the time it was the only decent amp I could afford that could do 2 ohms...I think it had one preamp tube, and selectable midrange controls. It didn't get heavy gigging use, maybe not able to push as much lows as I like but was was able to get a solid tone out of it.

Congrats on the new cab... :joy:
Special low-frequency version.
